    cloudy water

My tank is over 3 y/o - FOWLR. 55 gal with about 70 lbs of LR. Did a 7.5 gal water change yesterday. Added a heater as my old one broke and put in a new pump to circulate water a little better. Changed the carbon in the cannister filter and gave it a good cleaning. Didn't do anything all...

    So many options on feeding

I've heard that brine is not that nutritious. I'd vary the frozen a bit. Add some squid or clams. Mysis shrimp instead of brine. I don't feed pellets but a variety of flake. I feed flake twice per day, and usually some frozen shrimp/squid/clam & prime reef plus right before lights out. I...

    Quiting The Hobby !! Heeelp

I doubt high nitrates was the cause. I've been battling high nitrates in my tank for the past few weeks. First time I've tested in over a year (hang my head in shame) and while all my other parameters were fine, nitrates have been off the charts. I have a 60 gal FOWLR, though, so no corals...

    PH keeps drifting DOWN

I know pH fluctuates during the course of the day. It gets lower when the lights are off. Are you testing at the same time and after the lights have been on? I'd test right before I turn off my lights for the day. lisa

    New And Discouraged

My guess is your tank hasn't cycled. If LR is your main source of filtration you need more than just 12 lbs for a 90 gal tank - more like 90 lbs minimum. Ammonia is very toxic so I'd put a rush on the water change and do not add any more livestock until you know the source of the ammonia...

    clams & nitrates....

Thanks for all the help/ideas. Working on setting up a fuge. I brought some macro from Tropicorium and put it in the tank. Tang isn't feasting on it yet, but, hopefully it will help a bit with the nitrates until I can get the fuge going. We will be tearing down the tank in the next 2 months...

    Good bye

Olga- I agree with the above. Just leave it alone for a few weeks. Cut your lights to 6 hrs per day (if on at all) and just do you water changes weekly (10%). Cut feeding down to a light feeding every other day. Sometimes it seems that the more you mess with something the more it messes...

    UG Filters.....

It seems as if everywhere you go 99.9% of the hobbyists & "experts" will say that the UGF is a HUGE mistake when it comes to the marine/reef tank. Anyone here from Michigan and heard of Richard Perrin and Tropicorium? They are at www.Tropicorium.com and their entire system is based on the UGF...

    Kids say the funniest stuff...

My daughter is 2.5 y/o. We do the 1-2-3 method of discipline but, for the most part, my daughter is pretty easy. Anyway, on this one rare occasion she was misbehaving out in public (of course) and I say "one..........two....." My daughter pipes up "You're not two, mommie, I'm two! You're...

    Need HELP... pls....

Get some testkits and test your parameters - I bet they're all out of whack. It looks like you don't have the proper filtration and/or set-up. Before you go any further, take a few hours and read over these many posts here. There are many posts here that detail the steps and process to set up...

    What exactly is "aged" water.....

....I've heard this mentioned on the forum many times. I did a search, but none really explained what it was. Is it aged 48 hours or 2 weeks or 2 months? What are the benefits of aging your water? Currently I mix & areate 24-48 hours prior to changing water. Is this sufficiently aged...

This may sound like a stupid question....

It's for a 60 gal FOWLR. I wouldn't mind my tang eating some of it. Wouldn't mind growing it in the fuge and then putting some in the display for the tang to nibble... Would a plain NO work on this small fuge? How many watts would be needed? thanks!!! lisa

This may sound like a stupid question....

...but why can't you add some of the macro algae (i.e. chaetomorpha and/or red gracilaria) into your DT? I realize that my tang would eventually (hopefully) eat this. Is there any drawbacks to doing so? Also, are those HOB fuge's any good at reducing nitrates?? Or are they too small for this...

    Xpost from fish board......

I'm not sure if people jump from board to board. Only had two responses on my post would like to get a bit more input on how other people feed. https://forums.saltwaterfish.com/t/196978/feeding-schedules-and-a-few-other-things Thanks for the help. lisa

    Coraline Algea...???

I've heard that changes in lighting can do this. Changing duration of lighting. Not sure how true this is. Lisa

    Did we mess up already??

There is a huge debate on crushed coral or live sand as a substrate. I prefer CC but I think it's everyone's own personal choice. There are good and bad things about both. It seems to be the "fashion" to go with LS right now and most will tell you to go that way. It seems as if the CC lovers are...

    Adding LR

....or maybe I should say DR??? I have a FOWLR 60 gal with about 70 lbs of LR - tank is 3.5 yrs old so the LR is pretty well established. I'd like to add a few pieces of old LR that I have had from years before. We're talking just plain old rock that has been sitting on a shelf for years...

Feeding schedules - and a few other things.

What is right? What is too much? I have a 3.5 y/o 60 gal FOWLR. About 70 lbs of LR with a CC substrate. 3 power heads moving the water and a cannister as a mechanical filter aid. I'm having a nitrate problem (all other levels reading 0 w/pH - 8.2) which I think is a feeding problem combined...

    nano tank

Depends on what you are going to keep in your tank. I have a 60 gal FOWLR and do fine with just my LR and a cannister. I only have a five fish and 4 are pretty small. So, no, I don't think they are necessary. That being said, I think they are convienent and nice to have. Easier to make...

    55 Gallon Tank

I'm no expert, but I'd be careful about the damsels. Yes, they are very hardy and your LFS will probably try to sell some to you to "cycle" your tank. You don't need them to cycle, LR and some shrimp will do that for you, and they are pretty aggressive fish. If you try to add anything later...
