I had the same problem when I set up my bakpak2. It took about a week fot the noise to quiet down. It did start producing foam after about 2 days.

I have a firefish, 2 percs, 1 bicolor pseudo. The first week I got the firefish, he was harrased. His trademark dorsal fin has been bitten down to a stub. The other fish no longer bother him. Maybe they just didn't like that fin.

I guess since the tank you got was used, the rock is live and long cured. Why would you want to scrub this? After a while most rock will look like what you have. Take a visit to a LFS with reef tanks and see what they have. Don't complain about the rock you have. It is your biological filter.

I will be setting up a refugium in a couple of days. The tank has been running for about 6 months now with FO and LR. Along with the fuge, PS and LR, what are your thoughts on removing the fluval cannister filter? Is it necessary any longer other than to polish the water? Thanks.

Another small tip is to unplug and plug the cord in qucikly a few times to see if it seats properly!

Not familiar with your filter. But the impeller is similar to a small propeller with a magnetic shaft that spins when plugged in, creating water pressure. It may have not been primed.

what brand filter is it? Usually, the filter noise is from the impeller not being seated properly.

If you need to hang the lights from the ceiling, you need to pick a joist/ or wood beam. Screw a metal hook into the wood and you're good to go!

Most likely, it is the bulb if it partially working. The wave effect is most likely a bad bulb result.

Another safeguard is to make a "drip loop" on your electric devices before they go into a outlet. If you loop the wire, or make it sag below an outlet, any water that may find itself onto the wire will drip to the floor and not into the outlet.

You could do the math. Buying a RO system will pay for itself in well less than a year. Average store price is $.60 a gallon. Take that number and use it against the % of gallons of water changed in a month, then a year. It may seem like a big expense, but over the long term, you're saving $$$...
