How large a tank for an eel

Thanks. We have a nice corner between to displays that we think would make a nice spot for a corner tank. I haven't looked at any tanks yet. My original thought was a 72 bowfront or a 90 gallon so at least I'm in the right ballpark! My initial looks into lions lean me towards a Russell as...

How large a tank for an eel

My husband just bought a retail cellular store and he's thinking that a saltwater tank would be a great addition (something to entertain customers who are waiting - kinda like a doctor's office). He'd really like an eel, but I know nothing about eels (I have a 150 reef at home with very docile...

    Phosphate problems.

I am so at a loss as to what to do with my phosphate problems. My tank has been up and running since October and everything was looking wonderful until about 6 weeks ago when I started getting a brownish yuch on my sand. I thought it was diatomes, but now I believe it's dinoflaggetlates, so I...

mint green something in my sand?

I wish I could post a picture of this, but I've tried and can't get one that shows what I'm seeing. I have a 5" DSB and along the front of the glass in at least three spots I have patches of mint green "something" growing. It's really a very pretty green, but what is it? It's below the sand and...

    adding starfish

Thanks - I keep my sg at 1.025 and haven't had any problems with other parameters other than some excess diatomes (probably from my Oceanic salt). Now, I'll just wait until spring and then go with a red serpent again.

    adding starfish

Wow! I wished I'd known how special my red serpent star was when I had him. He came as a substitute on an order on my last tank. He was wonderful - came out to be spot fed, took food from my hand. I loved him until the day I found him on my living room floor! Still can't figure out how/why that...

    best lights for blue mushrooms

I purchased a rock with 13 beautiful blue mushrooms on it the other day. In my tank they look a little reddish/purple instead of the blue they were. I was looking at the tank with the lights off the other night using a flashlight and they showed up a beautiful blue. So, (on to the question) --...

    Flame Hawk breathing heavy!

Mine always looks like he's just run a two-minute mile! Don't know if it's normal or not, but I've had him for three months and he otherwise looks great. I attribute it to the hyperness of mine. He's always darting around the tank.

howmuch money do you have in your systems?

My hubby (also keeper of the $$$) says it's around $3000 for my 150 and we've only added 3 corals and some chromis and a flame hawk - the expensive fish are still a few months away......

    What is the best salt?

no, it's washing soda - sodium carbonate versus sodium bicarbonate. It raises the pH AND the alkalinity. A good reference is this article: http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm I recently learned that you can bake baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) at 300 degrees for an hour and...

    What is the best salt?

I've been using Oceanic with great results for the corals - but the pH and alk are a little low, so I've been buffering with washing soda - which is working out well -- and it's cheaper than adding calcium.

It's not loose, seems firmly planted onto the rock. It is, however, quite slimy!:)

My colt has a problem!! Please help

I can't tell if it's loose - it doesn't look like it's fully attached to the rock, though. I'm about to take the canopy off to do a water change, so I'll go check. I assume you're talking about the left, splitting stalk, being loose?

My colt has a problem!! Please help

So, what should I do?? Should I try to frag it today? I've never fragged anything..... If I understand the process correctly (I"ve read fragging the monster) I should cut the stalk on the left in half and place both of those stalks on another rock? Leaving the two stalks on the right on the...
