    acclimation from quarantine

    I have had a firefish in my 20 gal quarantine for 3 weeks. I am about to place him in my 90 gal w/parameters: Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 0 Ph 8.1 Calcium 420 Alk 8dkh S.G. 1.025 Temp 80 The 20 gal: Ammonia 0 Nitrite 0 Nitrate 15 Ph 8.2 Calcium 420 Alk 9dkh S.G. 1.025 Temp 80 RO/DI water for...

    BioBalls

The manufacturer of my wet/dry says to submerge up to the 2nd row and no more. If you fill too high and the power goes off you can overflow the sump, you should definitely test that before leaving town. If I fill 2 inches over my waterline and loose power my water will not overflow, that is my...

    catching the elusive mantis

Maybe you can try shooting some seltzer water w/a turkey baster into the whole where he's hiding or increase the salinity in a bucket of water to 1.035 or so. I have heard this will chase out those elusive critters. They are nocturnal so you might be able to trap him when he comes out at night...

    siphon a must?

I like the shop vac thing, pretty cool. With my 20 gallon quarantine, that sits on the floor, I use a powerhead. I attach one piece of tubing to one end to siphon the debris and another piece of tubing attached to the powerhead goes into a bucket to siphon the water for water changes, works...

    Cleaning bio-balls

What I have read from most sites is to take about 1/4 of them out and rinse them in saltwater you have removed from doing water changes. Do 1/4 each week. Check your parameters and I'm sure if they're as dirty as you say this should bring the nitrates down to a manageable level. I have had my...

    Good alternative to Turbo snails

2 out of the 4 Mexican Turbo snails I've had just died. The tank has been up for 6 months, the water quality is great and there is enough algae in my 90 gal. Nothing else has perished in the tank. They come from much cooler waters, around 60, well known industry expert Dr Ron Shimek states: They...

    Trouble keeping the temp up

I have a 90 gal w/ 2 100 watt heaters in the sump. With the pump for the protein skimmer and the return pump heating the tank 200 watts works for me. I would always have 2 in case one sticks or breaks. I have glass heaters and the temp stays between 79 and 80. If I had them in my tank instead of...

    Algea On Back Glass

Mexican turbo snails seem to be the best at cleaning the glass. My built in overflow is always kept clean by them and they do a great job on the live rock. Those big guys are great. IMO

super clean way to do water change?

I use the powerhead method, but if the powerhead is too weak or the tube is too far from the tank it wont work. Also make sure the outgoing vinyl tube is secure in the tank when filling or that puppy will be on the floor.

    Heat Issue

I am going to keep some jumpers, but I will try the egg crate, Thanks Do you think the t-5's would be the better choice and could I keep softies, leathers and mushrooms. Also, how much might the lights jump the temp up

    Heat Issue

I have a 90 Gal FOWLR that has just cycled. I live in a 3 level codo and the tank is on the 3rd floor. I have a wet/dry w/ a pump for the protein skimmer, a return pump, and 3 maxi-jet 900's. I just added a glass top and the temp is staying around 82 to 84( before the top was added it was around...

    No Ammonia Spike Yet

Will the tank cycle without a trace of ammonia. I have checked 2 more days and still no ammonia. Nitrite .25, Nitrate 40. Maybe like you said the cured rock is keeping levels below trace. I am still confused though. Can you have a cycle without ammonia. I don't think I missed it. I've checked...

    No Ammonia Spike Yet

I was going to feed the tank some flake food and get another 45 lbs of live rock before I was going to add live sand and a cleaning crew. Fish in about a month or so, just thought it was odd w/ what I've added there is not a trace of ammonia at this point. Thought maybe the NO3 solution was...

    No Ammonia Spike Yet

I have been cycling a 90 gal tank for 6 days. I have 40 lbs of live rock that I had shipped on Thursday w/ minimal die off. I have a wet dry that has been running for about a week. I also added 2 shrimp 5 days ago. Ammonia 0 Nitrite .25 Nitrate 30 PH 8.2 Temp 80 I have Salifert test kits. I have...

    Bio-Ball Concern

I have heard, debatable I know, if you cycle the tank w/ live rock there is a lot of die off w/the high ammonia levels and thats why I was going to wait until tank was cycled, add cured rock w/ a minimal spike to prevent a lot of die off. I was going to cycle w/ the rock originally, so still...

    Bio-Ball Concern

I am in the process of setting up a 90 gal FOWLR w/ a built in overflow. I have set up an Aqua Clear wet-dry underneath w/bio-balls. Will add live rock in a few weeks after cycle. Do the bio-balls need time for the bacteria to build up on them which I heard is about 10 days or so, or can I start...

I am getting a small shock when I put my hands in my tank.

Will a a 5 outlet GFCI shock buster that plugs directly into the wall receptacle work just as well as changing the wall receptacle and replacing w/GFCI. I purchased one the other day and thought maybe I should have just replaced the whole outlet w/a GFCI unit. Squid, if your there

    Stand and tank compatable?

They were compatable. I measured before buying. The stand is very solid. I was pleased w/it, and it took about 20 min to put together. The tank(after doing a leak test) fit on it with about 1/2 " play or less on both ends. I installed the Mega Flow overflow which is also very easy and quiet. I...
