    Caulerpa is evil

Well, when it isn't in an aquarium. Looks like some people should be careful what they do with their caulerpa harvest. Observe. Killer Algae: Caulerpa Taxifolia A KTVU Special Report May 2, 2002 This emerald green seaweed is "Caulerpa," a popular decoration for home and public aquariums. It's...

How did you stock your refugium?

Next time you head over to your LFS to buy something, ask them if they can throw some calpura into the deal. They usually will toss it in for free...at least in my experience. If not, i know there are a few members hailing from new mexio....NMreef comes to mind. You could always ask...

please give me an idea of what fish to get next.

IMO, 40 gal is much too small for all these fish when grown, no matter the amount of LR. A 75 is a much better choice. The 2 blennies will go to 4", the 4 damsels all to 3", scorpion to 4", puffer will probably get large 10"+? (never heard of a coral puffer), and the lion to 7". Thats ending...

Death of the Coral Reef in the Fla Keys

I agree with you....politics and money plays a huge (mostly detrimental) role, but it's not the only way things get done. People are just dumb, but its gonna come back and bite us all in the keister.

Death of the Coral Reef in the Fla Keys

I don’t entirely agree with you Beth. Although money plays a large part of it, science can and does have the ability to change things. The reason many marine scientists are out there is to look after the environment. Little thing do help (aquaculture/mariculture started out as a little...

Is an all damsel tank feasible?

Thanks 4 the imput. I definately was not considering dominos. Ed R, i'd have to say I tend to agree with you....but, i was wondering if damsels display similar behavior to multiple tangs in one tank. I know two tangs means trouble, but 4 or 5 tangs in a big tank seems to work. Scale down the...

Death of the Coral Reef in the Fla Keys

Finally, a conservation/reef awareness post. Seems like this is the one thing this board has been missing. Thank you Beth. It is so sad to see coral reefs being wasted away. We know so very little about land conservation, and yet we know even less about marine ecosystems. The tragic thing...

Is an all damsel tank feasible?

Byself and steamboat, Your responses sound promising. Sounds like the really big damsels end up dominating. The ones i mentioned all get about the same size at a similar rate. 3-3.5" max. They are all generally listed as semi-agressive. Not as nice as chromis, but not as mean as dominos...

Is an all damsel tank feasible?

Its definately going to be a reef tank, but I really want some colorful/interesting fish to complement things. Thanks for the suggestions!

please give me an idea of what fish to get next.

I re-read your list. Your damsels alone are a large enough bio-load. Try removing the daminos fiji devil, and chromis at least.

please give me an idea of what fish to get next.

Nothing, your very much overstocked now. Some of those fish will get much larger in the long run. Best stop now before they get way too overcrowded and you loose some of your fish.....very interesting choices btw...i like ;)

Is an all damsel tank feasible?

Im throwing around some ideas for stocking my new 50gal breeder tank. Its going to be about 70 gal total w/ a 20 gal sump/refugium included. So, im working with about 10-15 inches or so of fish. I was considering an all damsel tank (no, no all blue devils). Rarer damsel types like the...

Well if your planning a 20 gal, you wont be able to go with a 440 watt or 220 watt system of VHO's. I assume your tank is either 18" or 24" in lenght, if its 18" the max VHO watt bulb you can put over it is 40Watts. If it is 24", you can put a 75watt bulb up. I dont know if you've got a lot...

    FOUND A SEA HAIR?????????????

Well, i can tell you this. On page 355 of my organic chem text book they explain that alkyl halides rarely exist in nature. One of the few places they do occure is in red algae, which produce them because they taste extremely foul to fish. Certain sea hares eat this algae and turn the Alkyl...

    Moorish Idol

First of all, any fish that has a dismal captive survival rate and is not currently being aquacultured is a very bad choice. If you have to have this Moorish Idol, just keep in mind that your playing with odds that are vastly worse then what you would be working with at a casino. The house...

Stocking my first marine tank, questions

First of all, welcome to the board Keith! I think you've got a very nice set up going into this, but I think you may run into some problems with your fish list.
