    a water question plz help

When the water evaporates from your tank, it is not taking any of the salt with it (as more water evaporates your salinity will increase). Meaning, for top off water you should only be using fresh water. Seeing as though you have a smaller tank, i would consider just going to a grocery store...

    Dream Reef

Mr 4000's tank is amazing, and the tank has only been set up for a little while. When that thing has matured it will be unbelievable. I bet i know where he got his inspiration for the ecosystem filter. The LFS in Lansing he said he shops at runs most every salt water tank in their store off...

    NEED OPINIONS

What did you replace the first one with? The second tank has a lot more blue light, and IMHO i think it is too much. Thats just me though, maybe there is a happy median between those two lighting setups?

hey newb. here with some ???'s...

Yes, definately go find a good book on saltwater. The library probably even has one (although it might be out of date). Also, you might want to look around for a LFS (local fish store) and see what they have set up. Even though they often times give bad advice, it is at least benifical to get...

    just bought a tank

Yup, jeo said it. Dont worry about too much light either, the sun still has a 400 watt MH bulb beat by a long shot. Considering the size of your tank, and if you wanted the best lighting system and the largest array of options. 1 MH bulb for every 2 feet of tank (175 or 250), the 250 watt...

    tangs and clowns?

I would say that 7 fish in a 55 is too many. The clowns, depending on the species, will get to be about 3"+. Thats 18" of clownfish. If you stick to a 5 gallon/1" of fish rule...a 55 gives you about 11" of fish to work with. You could probably put in more then 11" of fish considering your...

    just bought a tank

Did it come with any sort of lighting set up? If you are going to keep corals you are going to need good lighting setup. You options are NO fluorescents, HO or VHO fluorescents, PC fluorescents, metal halides, or any combination there of. The minimal for corals with the weakest light...

SWF order arrived - how do I place shave brushes & feather dusters

I've seen those shaving bushes at the LFS, and it seem like they just burried a portion of the base in the LS. I think there were a few on the rocks though...not positive. I dont think that it would be important for the base to be in the sand nutrient wise, i would think that you just need to...

what do you do? glass tops

Thats a pretty good idea...save some cleaning time. I dont know about a vho or MH system though. Seems like it would melt under that kind of heat. Honestly, I really dont know anything about saran wrap melting point though

    550 W

What exactally makes a MH necisarry for keeping SPS and certain clams? What about if you have a shallow tank? Would vho be ok then? I have seen a few tanks with strickly vho systems that have both sps and maxima clams in them, and they all seem to be doing fine...good, bright coloration ect...

    NO Flourescents

Normal output fluorescents. They are just those regular coral life bulbs you sometimes see in pet shops. I believe most are about 40W or less. Advantage? Cheep as it comes. Disadvantage? 40W :p I would go with a nice package deal from Hello Lights...like you said...cheepest place...

    Choc Chip Star

I have one too, and it hasn't bothered anything except a pencil urchin I "used" to have. It took the poor bugger out. As of late though, the star has been taking to cleaning detritus and algae of the substrate (possibly easting pods too though). It goes to a dirty pad of sand with some algea...

    OFF TOPIC: Starwars: Episode II

I enjoyed "watching" the movie. If they would have left out all of the dialog and just put in music and sound effects, the movie would have been simply terrific. Instead, I had to sit through the most mind numbingly dumb dialog I have ever experienced. Great scenes with a lot of bad acting...

    TBS live rock

Thank you for the info Ags. I believe i will probably end up ordering some soon! Oh, btw..is it worth it to buy the stuff that has coral already on it? I am curious...seems like something that fragile would die in the shipping process.
