No you can put the live rock in the tank. The sump isn’t necessary. The rock is your aqua scape. A sump is nice to have. A skimmer is nice but not necessary. Here is my tank. All that rock is my live rock. In my sump I just have small chunks that didn’t fit into the aquas cape.

Are you sure you don’t have a crab or shrimp that hitch hiked in on your rock, like a gorilla crab? Sounds like that more than the tang.

FOWLR (fish only with live rock) is the only way to go other than some degree of reef. Fish only doesn’t provide the best environment for healthy fish. Like I said before the rock is your primary filtration. You only need a little live rock to seed the tank and the dry rock will becom live rock.

It works really nice for me. Everything is at counter top level. The only thing I have in the tank stand is my super low tech, gravity fed ATO. That is directly plumed to my RODI system so no need to ever deal with it.

When a fish dies I rarely fond a body. It's usually gone before I realize the fish is missing.

My ideas are no quarantine may be sick Osmotic shock.

I measure the salinity of the bag water then adjust the water in my quarantine tank to match. Then I just temp acclimate and dump the fish into quarantine for the next month. During that time I slowly adjust the QT salinity to match the display.
