    Need help

I always recommend you start the tank is macro algae in a refugium. The refugium can be just a simple partition to keep the livestock and macro algae separate. After a week or so I would add a single male molly acclimated slowly to salt water and not add food for a week. Then start feeding 1...

Rear sump vs in tank sump cabinet

We have a rear sump on our 60g and it is a real pain. The main reason is that this fat, old, crippled guy can't squeeze between the wall and tank to do any maintenance. The tank is in a corner (diagonal) so the squeeze is on with sides. Should have placed it a little further out into the room...

    Frustrating algae

algae scrubbing is using turf and other algae to scrub the tank of nitrates phosphates co2 and so on. Called an algae turf scrubber, you grow the ugly algae on screens then every so often clean off the screens. Along the same lines is using macro algae in a refugium. Again the idea is to grow...

    Frustrating algae

fwiw nitrates and phosphates come overwhelming from the bio load not the input water. And cannot be maintained at low levels through any water change schedule with any input water change levels doable by the average person. IMHO you need to consume the nutrients through things you like so the...

    Suggested water change frequency

    1) lookup diy 2 part 2) use a refufium or algae turf scrubber to balance out and stabilize the system. 3) suggested water change schedule with above: none. Just top off evaporative losses. my .02

What are some good water condtioners

try searching for Dr. Randy Holmes-Farley improved diy 2 part system. It is basically a diy calcium, carbonate (alk), and magnesium system. And uses calcium chloride, baking soda, Epsom salts and magnesium chloride. Calcium chloride is available from concrete redimix companies for like ~25...

    Nitrate levels

sump is the lowest container in a system where the water drains to and is pumped back to the highest container. A refugium is a protected area where (in this case macro algae) stuff is protected from predators. y .02

    Cycling

probably normal for your tank anyway. It all depends on you tank's setup. A tank fully balanced out with (macro) algae will show no ammonia spike. As the algae consumes the ammonia directly while the aerobic bacteria builds up. my .02

Starting my first Saltwater tank and need help setting up

I recommend you use macro algae much the same as plants are used in FW tanks. The macros will make it look nice plus balance out and stabilize the system. When first starting the tank you can use a male molly acclimated to saltwater. Once you get him to live for a couple of weeks then try the...

Really Considering a Blue Hippo Tang

I had a "dory" tank in my old 55g tank. It was originally about the size of a quarter and I first kept it in a small ~10g tank. It grew fast and a couple of years later was 3-4 inches. The wife's 60g also has a dory which was/is 3-4 inched long and doing fine. To avoid ich I recommend a...
