restarting my saltwater fish tank after I gave up on it

I would add macro algae protected with a partition and some side lighting to keep it growing. then wait a week and try a male molly. Don't add food the first week then feed only a single flake per day. Once you get the molly to live 3-4 weeks try marine only fish. my .02

    Drains and returns

no. IMHO the system should run with no flooding with absolutely no valves of any kind. But you can use valves for initial setup, priming the overflow and those types of things. Just not for limiting the water that flows into the sump for instance. And using a valve to slow down a drain can...

    Drains and returns

yes. (well kinda anyway) When the returns are over the back type and then exit is below the water line, they will form a siphon under power out. And drain water until the exits are above the water line or a small anti siphon hole is uncovered so air breaks up the siphon if the returns come...

    Drains and returns

if you're using a drilled tank you will need to have a drain pipe up to the water level of the tank. Or an overflow weir (partition) with the top at the water level of the tank. Without those I hesitate what I would call it. My .02

    Advise on cycling?

balance out your tank with macro algae. Use a molly acclimated to saltwater to cycle the tank. Then do the rest. my .02

help red and green allergy taking over

kill you lights and start feeding every three days. After the cyano dies off then resume with 1/2 duration lighting than before. and only feed once per day. Then adjust both so the corralling thrives (more lighting/feeding) but the cyano does not (less lighting/feeding)

New 55 Gallon Budget FOWLR tank

Actually what I used for the partition was 1/4" square plastic grid "egg crate". It's a light diffuser for dropped ceilings and is about $12 or so from building supply places. (sometimes in the ceiling section instead of the lighting section. Just crammed it in 3" in front of the back glass...

New 55 Gallon Budget FOWLR tank

you might want to look into macro algae. they are the marine equivalent to plants. but they do need com protection from fish as most fish will eat them. Even just a simple partition to separate the macro algae from the fish will do. With macro algae you get a tank that is balanced out a...

    Starting my first saltwater tank.

Best think I ever did on my old 55g (and also one of the least expensive) was to just cram in 1/4" plastic grid (egg crate/lighting diffuser from building supply stores) 3" in front of the back glass. I also added 2 4' 2 tube cheapie shop lights behind the tank pointing forward. That formed a...

    First time saltwater

You might want to research macro algae. It's kinda like live plants in FW. With salt the livestock do tend to eat macros so you may have to partition the tank into a small macro section and the rest a display area. If you first get the macro growing and established the tank will be much...

    SO NOISY

just looks at that overflow and it doesn't seem to have any point where excessive noise would be generated. Did you install the foam filter on the drain? Where is the noise coming from. The hob overflow, the t

So. Who are you voting for?

Thanks for posting. This whole trade tariffs stuff must make the US look extremely hypocritical to the rest of the world. FWIW the "US" producers are just as and always have been capable of producing cars with the quality of the Japanese. In fact they did exactly that even in the 70's and 80's...

meanwhile 970,000 cars with "foreign" names are being built in Alabama. Chattanooga Tn has a new vw plant. And if we enact protective tariffs not only will the US economy suffer but the entire world will be in a great depression. Just as happened with the first great depression with...

So. Who are you voting for?

IMHO such stats are worthless and just appeal to emotions. For instance my 2012 chevy sonic has 62% US content. And the toyota camray has more US content that any other sedan sold in the US,

So. Who are you voting for?

They don't have to follow a free market. Supply and demand cannot be overruled by any government laws or policy. US dollars will continue into their company regardless. On fast way to become a third world country is for our economy to crash because of central government policies on trade and...

So. Who are you voting for?

whatever rules "they" are playing with cannot overrule supply and demand. All that is required is US dollars go to China, Mexico, India, and while we're at it our largest trading partner Canada. The labor costs in those countries will increase in US dollars. No tariff policy, currency policy...

So. Who are you voting for?

thanks for doing the research. My point is that all such negotiations go against free market forces. And as such are counter productive. The hard thing for people like politicians to wrap their head around it that an all powerful central government controlling things are counter productive and...
