    New 29 gal CL biocube

It sounds like you are off to a good start. I'm not talking about the equipment or live rock, but that you are asking questions, and are willing to be patient this time. Your next purchase should be a good book, either "The Conscientious Aquariast" by Fenner, or "Saltwater Aquariums for...

    Marine ich

Treating your display for ich with any of the effective cures will also kill all of the invertebrates in the system, and depending on what treatment you choose, may render the tank unusable for housing a reef display in the future.

Did a water change now I have cloudy water.

What size tank to you have? In a smallert system the coral beauty, goby and pair of clowns could be a substantial load, and could cloud the tank. OTOH, sometimes changing the water stirs up gunk from the substrate and clouds the water. Keep a close watch on ammonium - if it goes up then you...

    Clowns

Tough question! IMHO, a fish doesn't know what its own markings look like. They are pre-wired to recognize the markings of the species. So, I suspect that when the snowflake ocellaris sees the black ice ocellaris, it will regard it as not an ocellaris, but as something else, possibly...

New to saltwater, getting ready to add water

Listen to almost 40 years of experience - never add anything to your display that hasn't been quarantined first. If you try to use the display as a quarantine you will have one of two options open to you: 1) When (not if, when) disease breaks out you can treat with "reef safe" meds, which will...

    High Nitrates in old tank

You might want to look into adding macro algae to the sump - they will outcompete the brown algae for nutrient and phosphate, and are easily removed, eliminating those contaminants from the system.

    The new tank!

Use raw shrimp in a woman's nylon stocking and measure ammonium until it rises to about 1, then monitor nitrates and ammonium. When ammonium falls to zero do a 10 % water change and add one fish.

Tank Upgrade - Reef Ready Pre-drlled Pros and Cons?

I have had both pre-drilled and external overflow tanks, and I prefer the pre-drilled variety. It cuts down on the clutter in the tank and after a power outage it starts up automatically. A con is that fish seem to jump into the overflow area more frequently, and it can be a frustrating...

    HorseShoe Crabs

These animals are peaceful, and large. We used to use 12 inch specimens in the lab. Probably your biggest problem will be their knocking things, like rocks, down.

can you keep a quarantine with just a bubbler and a filter

What do you mean by bioload "Bio load" is the total of all the live organisms being supported by a system.

can you keep a quarantine with just a bubbler and a filter

So have I. Just keep the bio load small.

is calcium carbonate good or bad ???

Coral skeletons are largely composed of calcium carbonate that they generate from calcium and bicarbonate. So long as your calcium and alkalinity are good I don't think you have to worry.

    Fish Dying

Just because I hate damsels (in tanks as pets, otherwise I have no particular beef with them in the wild), I would speculate that the damsels are harassing the newcomers. You might try putting new fish in qt for an extended time to get them well fed and adapted, then moving them to the display...

Help! New Sea Anemone Doesn't Look Right. With Pictures!

The other rock work in there looks too "clean", meaning the tank may not be mature enough for an anemone. How long has the tank been in operation, what else is in it, what kind of lights do you have and exactly what are your water params? If the water tested good at the lfs, did that agree with...

The end of the light bulb as we know it

We just switched all of our hi-hats in the living room and dining room to led, and are very pleased. We were able to choose the light quality we wanted (noon, warm or cool) and the spread (narrow, medium or wide light coverage). They were much more expensive that incandescent bulbs to buy, but...

    New to salt water

As anyone around here will tell you, I am very old school, and cycle my tanks using ammonium chloride (I work in a lab, so I have access to laboratory grade ammonium chloride). I just bring the ammonium level up to about 1-2 ppm, then wait for the nitrites to rise and fall, and I'm good to go...

    Red Sea Max S Series

All I can tell you is that the folks over at reefcentral were impressed with the workmanship on this unit, and they felt that the equipment (except the skimmer) was good.

    just getting started

Reading about this system, it looks great. The only concerns I see online are 1) Red Sea skimmers are not generally considered to be smoking the best in the market, 2) I wish it had LED lights, but it does have lots of T5's, and 3) the ATO topoff reservoir has to be filled manually. IMHO none of...
