    Emperor angelfish

I added a 3 inch imperator to my 110 gal system 15 years ago. It started to change 3 years later, continued for 3 more years. When it died during hurricane Sandy last year it was in my 220 gas system and was about 8-10 inches long, and had good color. It was fed lots of greens, formula 1 and...

    just getting started

You said you have a 50 gallon tank already on hand. This is not a bad size, depending on your goals. What is the history of the tank - has it ever been treated with copper? Are you thinking about a reef, with corals, inverts and fish? Or a fish-only tank. The rule of thumb (at least so far as...

    Bubble algae dilema

You can control bubble algae biologically with a couple of emerald green crabs, who love the stuff. I have also found that they are easy to remove safely using a dental scraper that I got from my dentist. It is sharp and scrapes the algae right off at their bases without breaking the bubbles.

    Why do I have this.

I have these all over my sump, overflows and equipment. I believe they are calcareous tubes of marine worms. I have never had a problem with them except when they begin to interfere with the operation of mechanical equipment.

Welcome to the site. Beth is right - take a look at Fenner's book (The Conscientious Aquariast), then begin to ask specific questions. You will find the folks on this site are knowledgeable and helpful - two very handy traits.

Lionfish eats all food before eel

Years ago I had a similar problem with a lionfish. I thought I could solve it by feeding the eel with a feeding stick, but the lion went after that, too. Finally my wife an I worked out a system in which i would use the feeding stick to feed the eel while my wife used an algae scraper to slap...

    Quarantine Tank

Don't count on freshwater dips to eliminate ich. The organism burrows under a mucus layer that shields them. Fresh water dips are pretty effective against a variety of other external parasites, but not so much for ich.

Why does my refugium water evaporate so fast.

Five gallons in 2-3 days is not impossibly large, particularly for a larger display.

    Another cloudy water thread

It sure sounds like a bacterial bloom. Be sure to have plenty of water movement throughout the tank since the bacteria will lower oxygen levels.

    First Saltwater Tank- 30 Gallons

Hi everyone! I just joined the saltwater sites to get as much advice and information as possible! I started my 30 gallon SW tank about two months ago. I've been reading up but I'm not quite sure where to go from here. I have 3 fish one coral and two feather dusters ... Do far they're okay... My...

    First Saltwater Tank- 30 Gallons

Hello there! Just an update- we're going with a bigger saltwater downstairs! Yay! It won't happen until spring, and now there will be more options for fish! We might just turn the 30g into a QT, because the tank could be up to 90 gallons! A 30 would make a great DIY sump. There are simple plans...

    Majestic Angel

Good question! My view would be that shy is different from aggression, so I would still add the fish last. I would quarantine it for 4-6 weeks just to fatten it up so that if it does become intimidated in the display it will have energy reserves until it begins to graze.

Cycling a tank - Ammonia stays at 0.25 and Nitrates are 0ppm ? Input needed !!

What kits are you using? I have never gotten a positive reading for ammonia on tap water, so I'm guessing that you are getting a false positive. It does sound like your tank has cycled, but this early you want to be sure to add organisms slowly so the tank has a chance to adapt. You might also...

    Quarantine Tank

No - it can take 2-6 weeks for ich to appear. Be patient, even though it's hard.

    New 29 fowlr

Sounds to me like you had a soft cycle. If you are producing nitrates then you have the bacterial colonies established. To start, add stock slowly, one animal at a time, weeks apart, and monitor ammonia levels. If they do happen to spike, use Amquel Plus as a temporary fix.
