    a few problems

UV can be very effective against ich, but not when it is used on a single tank. If you have several tanks connected to a common sump, then UV could prevent spread of ich from one tank to another, but in a lone tank, even if it kills 99% of the free swimming ich, that surviving 1% will reinfect...

    Royal Gramma not eating?

This is when the hobby gets demoralizing. Sometimes stuff just happens, and fish die without explanation. This sounds like what is happening now to your royal gramma. Sorry, they are neat fish.

    Sudden White Spot appears

I have to tell you that this doesn't look like ich. It may be a surface parasite, or it may just be a superficial wound due to either a fish fight or a collision with some rock. I would watchfully wait to see where the spot goes - it may just disappear. Most treatments for ich and parasites...

New Tank - questions on purchases & understanding

DIY rock is not live rock. You can keep your rock cost low by using the DIY stuff and one quarter true live rock, but you need some true LR to seed all the invisible critters that make a tank interesting and functional. Your budget may be low for the other equipment. You could spend the entire...

    Heater dilemma

Your system has a little less than 30 gallons in it. I would put 2 heaters, each suitable for 20 gallons, in the sump. That way, if one fails in the on position (they always do), it won't be able to cook your tank.

    30 Gal Setup

I don't think that a skimmer is necessary for a FOWLR. They are effective mainly at minimizing nitrate formation, which is not generally an issue for vertebrates.

    55 gallon new tank

A 55 is too small for a puffer. Always look up the adult size of any addition to the system. Puffers get big. Look at dwarf angels, most wrasses, etc. Also consider a shoal of several chromis for a beautiful and fascinating display. There are plenty of small-moderate sized fish that will give...

    55 gallon new tank

For a FO tank a skimmer can be handy, but is not a requirement. Many use carbon filtration regularly, others not. My own take is that unless you are trying to remove a specific substance (medication, for example), carbon is also unnecessary. Just live rock, good water flow and some type of...

why is a clown tang a expert only fish

Well if he tries hes eventually going to lose Someone is going to lose. You! You lose either an expensive clown tang, or something else. Clown tangs are not too bad in a 500 gallon system, and may actually become "friends" with other tangs. In smaller systems, not so much, mostly destruction.

why is a clown tang a expert only fish

Wait a while - as the clown gets bigger, it gets exponentially more aggressive, especially towards other tangs. If it doesn't die first from inadequate water conditions, it will eventually kill your other fish.

I need some help with a problem tank..

I had a bad aptasia problem, but eventually solved it. I injected the larger polyps with kalkwasser and added 3 peppermint shrimp (30 gallon system). I never see the peppermint shrimp, but over the course of 2-3 months all of the aptasia have vanished. Occasionally I do see a small polyp...

If you define pure capitalism as what Adam Smith described when he first proposed such a thing, then the Pope wasn't far off. Smith called for those who benefitted most from capitalism to undertake exceptional responsibility for those who have not been so fortunate.

Few ?'s about Chromis and stock

I'm not the only one to have a chromis problem. If you look around on this site you will find several postings about this, as well as several postings from folks who have had no problems at all. it's all magic. About the foxface - they are generally sold as juveniles in the 2-5 inch range...

Few ?'s about Chromis and stock

There must be some kind of trick with blue chromis'. I have gone through about 25 chromis' trying to establish a shoal, and have 1 ( yes, one) in my 220 gal system. At least swf.com was good about honoring the warranty.

    New to the site

If your flow is too strong you will need to throttle back your return pump. Put a gate or stopcock valve on the return line to the display and then gradually turn down the flow. I assume from you answer that you aren't getting a sucking sound, right?
