Getting new lights this week. I know I need to acclimate my tank slowly, but I'm not sure how. 40 gal regular.. going from 4x55pc new lights 4x95 VHO (woooweee!!) What would be the best way to do this. How should I adjust my photoperiod. currently 12 hours

I heard the icecap is the way to go. There are cheaper setups I could find but I want the abilty to upgrade or add a dimmer later when the funds allow. How hot do the bulbs run on yours azonic

I found a Icecap system..It comes in ABS hood with a fan and acrylic spash guard. This sounds good to me.. and should not present any cracking problems..Opinions???

I guess that means I shouldnt worry about the heat cracking the tank?

I found the lights I want 380 watts VHO electronic ballasts. I need a new canopy to fit them in. Since I dont have access to the necessary tools I will need to buy it. Is 4 inches above the tank ok for acrylic tanks. I would use two fans blowing into the hood. Any opinions are greatly appreciated.

Anyone have an suggestion how high above the tank VHO's should be on acrylic tanks

What do you think about this...I was looking at another sight (say Hello) and found a VHO retrofit. On my tank it would give me 380 watts. That would give me decent light and not as much worry about acrylic and heat. Would this allow me to keep most corals? Would a 6-7 in high canopy be enough...

It's a hit or miss with any angel. I had one he was great for 6 months..added a brain coral and he thought "dinner's served". Had to take him back to my LFS.

You can tell slightly if you hold it next to a new bulb, but it is not worth the risk. Once they get old the spectrum shifts and you can have ugly hair algae growth. I wouldnt take the chance. Hair algae is a monster once it starts.
