Cycle question - In a already set up tank.

If the rock didn't have any substantial die off, you might be fine. If the ammonia stays at 0 until the weekend, you are good to go.

Wait a minute, do we have a Maryland only thread going on here?

Cycle question - In a already set up tank.

Towson gal, huh? Exotic Aquatics, Perring Pkwy (top of 695) just outside the beltway, in the stripmall w/Safeway and Kmart. They have the best fish and inverts. Their staff is knowledgeable, and helpful. Aquarium Center, Liberty Road (west side 695) best live rock, rest of their livestock has...

    uv light?

Exile, I don't mean to be condescending, but you were wrong several times in that post. UV's are great for bacteria, but do nothing to parasites, unless the UV is way oversized for the tank (120watts on a 30gal might help). Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacter (nitrifying) bacteria are not pelagic, and...

    Who's your favorite Comedian?

Alonzo Boddin. He is hilarious in person. On Last Comic Standing, he was too toned down because of network TV.

    What is your favorite animal?

Akitas might be cool, but ligers root for The Orioles. I pity a dog with the misfortune of living with a Yankees fan.

Cycle question - In a already set up tank.

How did the rock smell when you got it? If it smelled like the ocean, rather than a stench, you might be good to go. Did you buty the rock locally, or did you have it shipped? I can give you some good local shops to go to if you want.

    Soft water

No, if you add 5 gallons of RO/DI water to a 55, your pH and alkalinity will go thru the floor. They will slowly rebound, due to the arogonite/CC dissolving, but the change will be drastic enough to shock the system. The change in salinity from 5 gal is not a MAJOR deal, but pH and alkalinity is.

    Soft water

If you use RO/DI with or without a softener, you want to add a buffer to bring that water's pH and alkilinity back up to where it should be. Topping off a 150 with 1 gallon is no big deal, but adding 5 gallons to a 55 is a problem.

    What is your favorite animal?

Akita, shmita. Do you have any idea what a liger would do to an Akita?

    Flame Hawkfish

Flamey (yes I named him) is by far the favorite of everyone who has seen my reef. I also have the luxury of a Flame Hawk who will perch in my hand. Flame Hawks are very personable, and will interact with humans. GET ONE!!

    What is this? Aptasia??

Mojano Anenome. They are as bad, if not worse than aiptasia. I would buy some "Joe's Juice" and apply it to them. These buggers reproduce asexually, meaning 1 can become 100 in a couple of weeks. Take my advice and start the killing ASAP, don't wait a week or two.

    Triggers continued

Sorry, I didn't clarify that the BOAT from Looe Key Reef Resort was nice. The motel is a dive (pardon the pun) and their tiki bar stinks. Did you get a chance to eat/drink at Boondocks? Its across the street, and they have the best conch fritters I have eaten. I used to live behind the Shell gas...

    Future Friends

Hawaiian Spotted Puffer may get eaten by the grouper, and then kill the grouper because of TTX toxin inside puffers. If your bank account allows, I would swap the Huma for an Assasi. Assasis are much less aggressive and look similar.

    My blue ribbon eel??

If I could pick 2 species that should be banned from sales because of poor adaptability, they would be The Moorish Idol (Z. cornatus) and Ribbon Eels (R. quesiata).

    Triggers continued

I used to work in The Keys, and would stay away from Pennecamp. The reefs are destroyed, and its obvious what too many people do to a reef. If you get to the Lower Keys, I would do Looe Key. A lot of charters go there, but the closest is Looe Key Reef Resort, on Ramrod Key (mm 27.5) They take...

    Whats a FreshWater Dip?

Reefeer was explaining a brackish water bath, which is good, but totally different than a FW dip. I don't like FW dips, because you are compounding the problem. A fish with ich is taken out of its home, dropped in FW, stressed beyond belief, and then put back where it got the ich in the first...

    using display water

Nitrosomonas and Nitrobacteria are not pelagic, they are always attached to something in the aquarium. If you take some substrate, or a decoration/rock, etc, that would "jump start" the cycling. The water itself will not.
