A LFS in town is selling a 12inch stalk of acropora for $50. The LFS told me the specimen is from a local person's tank that was recently torn down. Thus the cheap price. It says a few independent stalks coming off. I do not have the lighting to keep acropora but figured it might be a good...
Aside from having a brittle base mine adjusted to my tank in 3-4 days. It is half way up my tank in moderate flow wedged between 2 rocks. The specimen I have seems healthy and relatively hardy.
I have not tried to target feed it, moreover, it did not respond to live brine that inadvertantly...
Looking more closely there seem to be some live tissue just beneath the healthy tissue. However, it is devoid of any color or polyp extension. Assuming it will spread to the dead skeleton am I doing the coral more harm than good by letting it be? My thought process is that it made a comeback...
The micromussas I have seen have amazing coloration. Different from anything I have ever seen. Bright, intense oranges, reds, pinks, purples, etc. Still does not justify the lofty price tag but striking nonetheless.
Mine does this sporadically as well and it is not dieing. In fact I have had it for over a year now. Mostly happens after I do a water change and the new water is siphoned too closely to the duster.
A couple weeks ago I decided to reaquascape my tank. I must have had a low flow area somewhere in the rock work which unleashed some lethal bacteria buildup because within hours my green montipora cap, orange montipora digitata, orange montipora cap and huge branching hydnophora died. The...
I have over 7 watts per gallon and wouldn't think about trying a clam. The only SPS I keep are motipora digitata and montipora capr. I also keep hydrophora but most do not consider it an SPS. I like it the branching variety bc it looks like an SPS and grows like a weed. Both do reasonable...
cynobacteria, aka red slime algae, is the result of excess nutrients and/or having your lights on too long. Eliminate the excess nutrients and the cyno should go away.

how many watts would you say would be good for a 90 gallon?

Someone a little more versed in reefkeeping can give a more scientific explanation. However, I think mixing up the sand screws with the balance thus causing a mini cycle. I just remember several posts advising me to do it this way to avoid this. I pretty much followed everyone's advice...
A couple years ago I upgraded from a 55 to a 90 gallon tank. I transferred all my fish and corals at once without incident. Like JB said, keep enough premixed water for any emergent water changes and you should be fine. As for your DSB, I suggest getting a large enough scooper to move the DSB...
Although the advice above is solid I seriously doubt the acclimation procedure you are using is killing your fish. I have never used the drip method and utilize something more closely to what you described. However, I typically allow longer for the bag water and tank water to level off.
You...
The algae is probably the result of something other than too much light. Although photo period is important to algae growth most reef keepers run their lights 10-12 hours a day so unless you are running them longer than that it is probably something else.
I suggest looking for an excess...
all soft corals can be kept under that light. Toadstool, hammer, bubbles, brains, foxtail, candycane and trumpets too.
Good water quality first and foremost.
I don't think that is a gorilla crab. Half my rock came from TB and for a year I dealt with those damn things. The gorillas I had were much hairier than that. However, you are right wicked predators that will kill and eat anything.
