What's the best salt for a reef tank?

I used the Deep Ocean brand of sea salts. It has worked good for me.

    Algae? Too much food?

Everything is at normal levels right now. Nothing is elevated past normal. I was told by one person at the LFS(customer) who did the same thing as I did, (same products, live rock etc) that their tank cycled in 10 days. Is it even possible that this tank has already cycled with the products and...

    Algae? Too much food?

Ok, it has been one week since I setup the tank. Everything seems to be going fine, I have not lost any live rock or anything. I just checked the levels and all is fantastic. One thing I did notice is that it seems like I am getting a brown covering on part of my sand in the tank. Is this a form...

    Refill / Wet Dry

OK, I was just thinking about refill systems to help top off the tank when water evaporates. With a wet dry system, I believe will keep the water level the same in the tank. Is that a correct statement? Meaning if I fill the water in the wet/dry to the proper level, it should raise the water...

Does anyone keep a diary / notes?

I just added the document I made for tracking stuff in my tank. Check out my site at http://www.xecko.com/saltwater/ and there is a link for Aquarium Log. It is in MS word format. I just punch holes and put it in a 3 ring binder and it helps me keep track of everything. -Andy

    Pictures of my tank

I have not decided to use background because we are looking to make it a reef tank which will eventually cover the entire back of the tank good enough :) Not sure if that is advised by people or not just to keep the fish thinking they are in an ocean environment. But so far, no we are not...

    Pictures of my tank

All, Here are pictures of my tank that I just started last week and that I have been bugging you all with questions about for the last few days. I love digitial cameras, now if I ever need to identify anything I just snap a picture and post it :) http://www.xecko.com/saltwater/pictures.htm If...

Does anyone keep a diary / notes?

I keep notes on everything, daily water temp, when I add something, levels etc. This way I can easily go back and trace any mistakes or items that may have caused a problem. I even log when I have added water, mostly because I am forgetful. --Andy

    New tank! YIPPE!

First thing that caught my attention is the .60 cents a gallon. You prolly cannot get much better than that, especially mixed with salt. I am not a salt water know it all and my previous posts prove that :) I was just curious if maybe using their salt if that could be an issue maybe he used...

    Another Stupid Question

Do you think I should do this after the nitrate cycle and after I add more LR? Right now I am only at around 40lbs of LR. I want to get about another 60 or so, and I have about 20 lbs of live sand and 40 lbs of tropical sand. The bio balls are part of a wet dry filter. I was told by the LFS...

New LS and Water Test Sharks please help

You should also quarantine anything before putting it in your tank. Everything I have read about getting sand from the ocean or anything else is that you should always give it a few days before putting it in your tank and causing bigger problems. Just keep a close eye on the tank and hopefully...

how to get my amonia to rise

Did you start with live sand and such? I think if you have Live Sand I have heard that the ammonia cycle would be very short and would start going into the nitrate/nitrite cycles. Just what I heard. --Andy

    RO/DI - Asking for opinions

Yeah I think mine filled up a 20 liter trash can in like 4 hours which is only a few gallons of water. I think that is somewhere around 4-5 if I remember right. 1 liter = .26 gallons. So right now I could probably get about 25gpd from mine, but who really wants to wait 24 hours? I dont lose...

    Mistakes

I just started a week ago and one of my problems was moving too fast. Although i was lucky and nothing perished in my quick setup, I learned a lot over the last few days by reading books, reading this forum and browsing the web. I will from here on out take my time with everything that I do so...

    Another Stupid Question

Everything was always flowing ok, just when I added water to the wet dry it shot out all the extra sand. So I guess it kinda got cleaned out anyhow. Thanks for all the advice. --Andy

    Another Stupid Question

Ok , being that I am supreme newbie and worried about every little thing damaging my tank and fish here goes the latest in the series... Since I had sand floating around for a couple days in the tank it has collected in small deposits throughout a few different places in my wet/dry filter. In...

    RO/DI - Asking for opinions

Brian if you have some time I can give you some feed back on the Ultralife Reef Products RO/DI unit. I just bought(today) a 25gpd model and it cost me $120. I can post back to you with the results although I do not have a phosphate test kit. Anyone else have experience with the Ultralife RO...

    Watts vs. Kalvin(sp??)

Thanks a lot, if I added another of the same type of light do you think I would be ok for most corals? I dont have anything yet, just figured I would check with the gurus before I bought another light. I want something that fits under my customer lid vs. hanging from the ceiling or something. If...

    Hanging Lights

For all of you who have aquariums with custom wood lids, how did you hang your lights? I did not get a clip with my lights and I want to hang them. I can go get some chain and such from the hardware store, but that will rust very quickly. What do you all recommend. I just have a light bar...
