    you live in Dayton so you have the same crappy cold weather as I do. I add about 1 gallon or so every few days with no tops. It's the cold and dry that increases evaporation levels

    on the bottom right of my second picture you can see the sponge i'm talking about. The discharge water has about 12" of trickle down before it hits the waterline in the sump
