    Bored...starting a 10g Nano

Anyways I'll be tagging along, I'm in a similar process of set up right now on a 5.5 gallon. I'm curious, do yo uwant the chaeto/mangrove to be in the main tank? Would you maybe be dividing it with some plexiglass for two seperate portions to the tank?

New tank setup with established ecosystem

Well I think they have bag dates and expiration dates, so you can tell how fresh it is. I believe the live bag sand has bacteria and worms in it.

    New Pico Tank Build

Did a 1 gallon water change today, here's the count; SG: 1.025 PH: 8.0 DkH: around 8.4 Ammonia: 0.0 Nitrite: 0.0 I buffered the Alkalinity which should raise the pH a bit. But the levels are at the bottom for acceptable levels so I think it should be ok to buy some livestock.

That's what I thought you had based on the first description. I find those in my filter pads all the time.

    New Pico Tank Build

Ok so I'm coming up on two weeks, still got a diatom bloom. I'm going to test all my parameters again this weekend and probably do a 1 gallon water change. Then get some cerith snails to round out my CUC. If my levels are good I'm going to look into ordering a pom pom crab, and maybe get a...

    Does Chaeto Really Remove Nitrates?

While we are on the topic of chaeto. I've got a 24 nano with chaeto in my fuge. The chaeto "ball" has quadrupled in size since I set up a fuge in the sump area maybe five months ago. I've heard that chaeto doesn't technically export nutrients unless it's cropped periodically. Anybody have any...

Nice diagrams! I'd probably try and corrugate the top of your pipe like you have shown. It should provide more aeration that way.

    cycling quistion.

yah, don't add fish. (it will work, but then your stuck with a damsel or burn the gills of whatever you add if they survive, alot of times other fihs will develop ich too) you can ghost feed a couple of pellets every few days to get your ammonia started.

    New Pico Tank Build

Ok, so I noticed a small diatom bloom last night. This morning it was already cleaned up from the sand. So that means the ammonia phase of the cycle should be diminished and moving to an increase in nitrite right? (this is only my second tank set up, exhibiting my signs of newb)

haha, whew, these hole in the wall builds always make me nervous! Typical salt is about 1/2 cup per gallon I believe. So it takes ALOT of salt for a big tank. Most end up getting 3 to 5 gallon buckets of salt for making salt for a set up thats that size. Check the brand and try to find if its...

So the first thing I saw when I saw your cut was, hmmm hopefully that wasn't a load bearing partition wall, did you look at the existing structure at all, since you didn't add any new jams or headers after cutting out all those studs? Otherwise the project looks exciting, should be interesting...
