    Auriga Butterfly

$13.99 is really good. He'll probably eat any of those. Brine shrimp doesn't have much nutritional value, it's really just a treat food. Think of it as giving them some candy.

How long should I run my lights?

12 on, 12 off is the best for tropical fish. If you have a sump or seperate refugium that is also lit, you should have that light on for the opposite hours of the tank light.

    Auriga Butterfly

They're fairly hardy, for a butterfly that is. I fed mine general carnivoire flake foods, and once a week he got frozen. I sold him to the zoo after about 6 years or so.

I had ich...how long should I keep an empty tank???

Ich can not survive more than 14 days without fish. Do not use any skimmer on a tank with medication. If you take water from the main tank for the QT, it needs to not have any contact with fish for a total of 14 days.

How many people actually do their water changes?

I've never used a calendar to decide when to change my water. I test nitrate every week. When it hits 10, I change 25%. I retest the next day and change whatever it takes to get it to 0.

    $40 Tupperware Beckett skimmer

I did not design this, I found it. I have one improvement. Make the outlet out of 2 pieces that fit snuggly inside eachother so that you can adjust it by simply raising or lowering the top half instead of recutting it. 1) Here it is assembled (Click on the little pics to see the full size...

    Beckett vs Needlewheel Skimmer

Speaking of inexpensive Beckett skimmers, I found this Tupperware one for a total of $40! (I did not design this) Click on the little pic to see the full size ones. The plastic containers used to construct the skimmer column. I cut a hole in the bottom of the spagetti and spice jars. then used...

    Beckett vs Needlewheel Skimmer

Good article, thanks. Because of the huge difference in retail price versus cost of materials, I usually build my own. Haven't seen a lot of plans for Becketts, but I have seen where you can buy the valves so thats a big start.

    disstilled water???

We always used to refer to distilled water as "dead" water. Make sure you aerate it for a long time as it contains no dissolved oxygen. At my daughters college dorm they watched Nemo and afterwards everybody got a free gold fish. They put them in small bowls of distilled water and handed them...

    LIONS and ?

Oh yeah, almost forgot, eels can be a bad idea. They like the same food and attack from below where there is much less danger of being stung.

    LIONS and ?

With the exception of triggers and puffers, fish known to be fin nippers usually aren't that big of a problem with lions. If the species of lion and the other fish are from the same area, the other fish will recognise the lion as poisonous and generally not be stupid enough to risk their own death.

how far must I submerge heater?

Submersable heaters need to be submersed. Quick funny lfs guy story. I was in charge of returns at the warehouse. A lfs owner wanted to return 24 heaters, he said they were defective. The glass was shattered on all of them. When I asked him what happened he said "the dang things heated up real...
