    Help from DIY Sump Experts

I'm not quite sure I understand what you want to do? Are you stacking the tanks? The PVC and eggcrate you can get at Lowes. The bulkheads and the U-tubes from your LFS. The acrylic you will have to get from a plastic's dealer. Look in the phone book. Yes Lowes and HD have acrylic, its junk and...

    swaping substrate

You can remove half at a time. This way the old will seed the new. Or you can remove all the old and place some in nylon bags (stockings) and place it back in the tank to seed the sand. Rinse dry sand very well before putting in the tank. Use a pc of PVC cut to length (1.5"-2" pipe with a 3"...

Do I really want a controller?

Yes Crimzy you NEED to get one ! So you can tell ME if it was worth it! J/K It seems to me that it would be a great thing to start out with (but you haven't a clue what you're doing) but once you're invested so much on all the other timers and such is it worth it? Don't fix it if it ain't broke?

    what size overflow box....

The question remains whether that particular sump will handle that much flow (18) w/o micro's getting back to the DT. With a fish only tank and the supplemental flow that is all ready in place I see no reason to go with an 18. Reef tank different story and might well be worth the chance with...

    what size overflow box....

I know with an 18 you will have to reduce flow. Been there and had to really crank it down. Yes I think you'll be just fine with a FO tank and that much flow.

    Help from DIY Sump Experts

The biggest thing is to match the pump with the OF. You want something strong enough so the bubbles from the front box get carried all the way through the U-tube. If the flow isn't strong enough then bubbles will collect at the top of the U-tube and it will eventually fail. CPR just has a...

Is this too much??? Help please

Reef Tank? Softies, LPS, SPS? I would think if you went with Softies and LPS the 150 would be fine. SPS I think the 250 would be a better choice.

    what size overflow box....

How much flow do you want? IMHO, with that sump, I would be curious how much flow it can handle? I'm also not a fan of "all in one units". You would better off buying a sump and skimmer separately. You will just have more versatility down the road. Approx. 10x would be a 1200 gph OF and then...

Is this too much??? Help please

What are you going to keep? With the 250 MH you'd be set for anything. I would consider going with T-5's to suppliment rather than the CF's. Longer bulb life and better overall lighting IMHO!

    Aquarium Safety

Total Watts (equipment) divided by volts (120) = AMPS Total Amperage on a single circuit should not exceed 80% of listed amperage on the breaker (15 amp = 12 - 20amp = 16). This is total for a circuit, not just the fish tank! Wire gauge 15 amp = 14 gauge wire. 20 amp = 12 gauge. DO NOT PUT A 20...

How do I do a water change?

A return pump is based on the tank size and overflow. Here ya go. Get a bulb siphon hose. This will start a siphon by itself and you won't have to "scoop" water out of the tank. Just drain into 5 gal buckets and throw away. To refill, I have a pump in my mix tank that mixes water and then by a...

    Question about overflows PLease help

U-tube OF's will not lose siphon when the power goes out! Its physics! As long as both ends of the U-tube are submerged the siphon will start when the pumps come back on. No aqualifter needed. The rear box should either have a compartment that holds water or you can use standpipes to retain...
