I dont think the new water is the problem. if you buy some LR that has already been established then you might be fine. In my 65 I had about 140pounds of LR thats had been a system before that for at least 6 months and ALL new water, I didnt see a spike.

you only have 250watts TOTAL of MH over a 180? now watts arent everything but its an estimate. Im going to go out on a limb here and say your light is the problem. I have 2 150s over my 65...

does anyone have any experience with them? Is it like a 50/50 chance he will be reef safe?

I had a pair for a couple of months.. i got rid of them, they were huge and every time I put my hand in the tank they would try to attack it. It was kind of freaky and got on my nerves.
