How did everyone get their nick names?

I used to play piano for a living (musi) then I learned to fly (pilot). So there

    powerheads, please explain

I've used RIOs, which are great, until they burn out (which they will do within a year) and Maxi-Jets, which I use exclusively now. You want your tank volume (55 gals, 90 gals, whatever) turned over about 10 times an hour in my opinion. Therefore...a 100 gallon tank would need powerheads adding...

    Do Horseshoe crabs molt??

Yes, they molt, but not as regularly as other invertebrates. An interesting thing about them...every time they molt they are 125% of their previous size. Save the old shell, it makes a great ashtray :) "Buster and The Big Guy"

Has anyone ordered from ocean rider?

All of our seahorses came from oceanrider. In my opinion, its the only place to get them. Their horses are tank born, and raised on frozen mysis. The biggest challenge in keeping horses is getting them to eat, oceanrider takes care of this in advance! If you're just starting out, go with...

Why didn't God make a saltwater plecostomus?

The problem with the pleco is that its the juveniles that clean film algae, once they get older they like meat, like your oscar. I wish they were saltwater, they'de do well in agressive tanks!

    powerheads, please explain

Agreed, these are something you NEED to have. The ocean is always moving, and moving FAST. You want to simulate the environment as best you can. In our 92 gallon reef tank, we have 4 powerheads, they total 1200 gallons per hour of movement, which is a lot. We have two who's flow meet at the...

    What the Heck!

Good question. Is letting the fish run into a possible mini-cycle worse or better then the disease? You CAN use water from your tank to start it, you'll be going into hyposalinity by removing tank water and replacing it with fresh water (over the course of 48 hours) so there really is no harm...

One ich question I can't find the answer to...

Ah Beth, always on patrol :) Actually, we started using a q tank for all new arrivals, this tank predates that. We'll get it right!

    seahorse and coral in tank

The problem with housing seahorses with corals is simply this: If the coral will be adversely affected by the horse grabbing onto it, you're in trouble. We tried a colt in our seahorse tank, forget it, after 3 days it was shriveled up so bad it looked like a mitt left out in the rain. Two MONTHS...

    What the Heck!

I my humble opinion, you want a hospital tank to mimic the show tank as much as possible as far as filtration. I know this is tough to do, but it helps. Don't bother with live rock and live sand in the hospital, since hyposalinity will destroy most of the creatures that make it "live". The...

One ich question I can't find the answer to...

Thanks for replying Beth, I had a feeling you were going to say that. The problem is, I can't starve them out, I have a pair of skunk cleaners and a pair of blood shrimp in there that mate and hatch so regularly the chromisis get a treat of live larvae on a regular basis. I have a feeling I'm...

    What the Heck!

If its fish only so far, I would suggest you do two things -- First...hyposalinate your show tank, and rid yourself of ich forever. Second-- get a hospital/quarantine tank for future purchases, so you will not reintroduce ich to your show tank. PLEASE take this advice to heart...it will save you...

One ich question I can't find the answer to...

Ok...ich experts, here's one for you. We use hyposalinity for new arrivals in a quarantine tank, and we haven't had an ich outbreak since. BUT -- in our large reef tank, there is still some ich present, demonstrated by a purple tang we put in there that became a spotted purple tang in a week...

    Hawaiian Dragon Eel

If anyone is interested, one of the LFS near me still has their "show" dragon for sale, he's beautiful. He's about 2 1/2 feet long, in perfect shape, and they're asking 500 for him, which is a deal. Wish I had a tank for him!

Help please i want to get rid of my damsels and get a lion...new to sw & have ????

If you get the lion, don't worry about your damsels, or your peppermint, they'll be gone in minutes. READ carefully about lions before you take the plunge...you're limiting your future choices by centerpiecing with a lionfish. Be sure thats what you want to do!
