    Pinecone Fish

Anyone ever kept one? I've been researching them for a while, and I have a spot in one of my tanks for him...but they're very pricey, and I don't want to take the plunge until I hear from my fellow SWFers. Anyone?

    silversides ?

I thaw them in a shot glass filled with tank water, then cut them into 3 pieces, and drop em in. They're gone real quick. I also take one piece, skewer it with a wooden skewer, and hold it for the Rhodactis mushroom...he closes over it quickly and eats the whole thing in about 20 minutes.

    tank setup

Yes, with a few more things, and time. You need a heater, and you should have some powerheads for water movement. The Flame should be added LAST, and certainly not any time before the tank has been running 6 months, or he'll starve and feel uncomfortable. For many reasons, this fish thrives in...

    red flowers on LR?

I have them too...I put a photo below to confirm we're talking about the same thing. I always assumed it was a form of coralline. Anyone have other thoughts?

    Shipping Caulerpa

    Well, John....I tried 3/5, that did'nt work, and 3/4 was a nightmare, so 7/10 it is! :p

    Shipping Caulerpa

I'm about to send a few portions out to friends on here...here's my recommended shipping method: Get some of those ziplock containers, they're cheap, about 5 bucks for 6 of them. Fill them 7/10 with water, drop the caulerpa in, seal the top, then tape the top securely with shipping tape. Put it...

    Help for a Hammer please!

Don't panic, its just a coral thats dying due to lack of something it needs. Hammer (or anchor) corals are very picky, and sometimes do well, sometimes die in the manner you're describing. Its not going to do any damage to the tank other then break your heart as you watch it go. We've had...

    Harlequin Beauties

I've seen a few species tanks of harlequin shrimp, and only ONE shrimp out of all the ones I've seen would eat anything else, and that was frozen mysis. Unfortunately, these guys are notorious for eating only starfish. If you look online, there are sources of "feeder starfish" which are small...

    Survival Time Frame

Tough stuff! First of all, if you have lids on the tank, take them off, you need as much oxygen exchange as possible with no power. You can invest in a few battery powered air pumps, they're cheap, and will help move the water around a little if the power goes. If you want for future...

    Cleaner shrimp life span

Ok, I'm arguing with a friend of mine...so lets hear from you guys. Whats the longest you've ever had a scarlet skunk cleaner shrimp live? We have one that is 2 1/2, and thats where my friend is going nuts. He claims they won't live more than a year. Yours?

    Positive ID help

Wow, tough one NM. After some research, the best I can give you is that it is PROBABLY a coral of the porite family. I found several references to montipora growing out of porite bases when there are current or position changes on the reef due to storms or other natural occurance. Chances are...

    Test Kits.......Amonia?

Good question. I use the Red Sea for Ammonia and Calcium, and I use the Salifert tests for everything else.

    Test Kits.......Amonia?

Ammonia tests are tough, agreed, thats why when someone asks what test kits I use, I have to give them a few different brands. After many years, you figure out which ones work for what, and settle on a few you can trust. The only ammonia test we use now is the Red Sea test, and we've tried all...

I agree NM, that top part looks like a Velvet Finger (Montipora digitata) that has not yet opened its polyps. Here's a site on this particular species where there are some great photos for you to compare. http://www.globaldialog.com/~jrice/c...e/digitata.htm I'm not sure what its sitting on, but...

I declare myself officially an idiot.

This is a good one, and I'm sure NO ONE else on here has done this, right? I have a hospital tank under my main FOWLR in the wood stand, which has two doors to gain access to it from the front. The back is open, but against a wall., The hospital tank is one of those standard 10 gallon jobbies...
