It really depends on the ballast and the bulb..Some bulbs can last 2+ years (sakisstandard ballast) some only 4-6 months (Radiums/ HQI ballast). I like to start out running my new bulbs on a shorter photo period and increase as the bulb ages.

Mike, IMO, you might try slowing the Mag 18 down a little till the tank matures..Its not like that pump is over kill, hec I use a Dolphin Amp Master 3000 as a return on my 120 with 40 gal sump. What kind of stand pipe are you using in the overflow?

I've been using a Sequence Baracuda for 6 months or so. Lots more flow then my Dolphin Amp Master. I'd rethink drilling the tank. Its give a much cleaner look and if you throw in something like the Ocean Motion you'll add some nice wave action. If you buy a well built tank you shouldn't have to...

I don't use Durso pipes I use Stockman, same principle...I like to have the water right up to the bottom of the teeth in the overflow, maybe a little lower. You can try two things that I can think of 1) drill the hole a little bigger till you get the level where you want it and it stays there...
