Need more info on live rock plus other things

Not to be a smart-aleck or anything, but I think the thing you need the most is a different LFS. On a more helpful note, yes, you still need to test the water. If you don't want to invest in testing kits right now, most LFS will test your water for free if you bring in a sample. The most...

LR...why do you get it from there?

In addition, what sells as live rock around here is so pitiful in looks--hardly any colorful coralline. I know that's not all there is to live rock, but what we got on line far surpassed what is available locally. We are still discovering new critters after several months, I doubt that would...

    just sharing hitchiker experience

We had two small crabs as hitchikers on an order of LR. The first one I removed as soon as I found him and took him to the LFS for ID. They described it as a common rock crab and not a big deal to have in the tank. So when the second one was seen we let it stay. He grew and became more bold...

    Lighting for LR?

Hopefully, you will receive several replies to this topic because I am not 100% sure, but I think the calcium level and good water circulation are more critical to coralline growth than lighting. We only have NO fluorescent and have had slow but steady growth on live rock. Hope this helps!

    Glass Enenomes

they multiply and can "take over" live rock.

    Glass Enenomes

Many people say peppermint shrimp will eat them, that sometimes works and sometimes not. Also, you can inject the center with either boiling water or a strong calcium solution with a small syringe, some folks say that works too.

    peppermint shrimp AWOL

i tried to search the archives, but couldn't find anything on this exact question--we have two peppermint shrimp and one is totally missing for at least a week, since the rock was slightly rearranged. Though at first he was just freaked by the change but the tank just isn't that big--not a sign...

    OT: What's Your Favorite Quote/Saying?

This one came to me in a very "twilight-zone" way on a page-a-day calendar when I was in the midst of a very difficult decision: Yiddish Proverb: When one must, one can. Have kept it on the fridge since.

    liverock, decor rock, base rock??

I think its gonna depend on the site. Some places have different "grades" of live rock--depending on how nicely shaped the rocks are, how large, how much coralline present, etc. Sometimes if you order the more basic (cheaper) stuff, you might get more pieces of smaller chunks rather than a nice...

    What is RO water??

RO is reverse osmosis, a method of filtration. Around here distilled is about 58 cents a gallon (the cheapest) but RO is more like 39 cents. I'm not sure if distilled is considered pure enough, maybe someone else can field that one.

    Water Tests

The most basic water testing is done for ammonia, nitrite and nitrate. Those are generally considered the most important for starting up. Most on this BB will recommend RO/DI water, which you can make yourself if you want to invest in purchasing a unit, or you may have RO water in your home...

Does anyone know the weight of a Oceanic 72 Gallon bowfront with Oceanic stand? :-)

If you can't get a reply here, Oceanic must have a website with specs of their products, or at least a toll free number for customers to call. Good Luck.

    Coral Trading - Wisconsin

Don't feel like the locals aren't out there--just have nothing to trade! We live in Greendale. My daughter is the tank owner, I am actually the driver-to-the-fish-store, but the LFS guy keeps telling me to get my own tank!

    Quarantine live rock for ich?

If there are no fish in with the rock at my house, how would I know if there was anything "ichy" (pardon the pun) in there until I put it in my tank? Thanks

    Quarantine live rock for ich?

I may have a chance to purchase some live rock from someone who is breaking down a large tank (saw an ad in the paper) So I don't know these people--is there anything to do with the rock to be sure I'm not introducing anything bad like ich to our current tank. I will ask but you know how that...

    Pink algae on glass

sounds like coraline algae, the colored stuff that grows on live rock. Do you have live rock in your tank? some people just leave it, if it bothers you, you can use an algae scraper to remove it.

    Algae

as long as you mention lights, you might just want to stick with the light(s) you got with the tank until you decide just what you want. Upgrading lights is expensive, you dont want to buy something and then later decide you really need something else. Good Luck!

    water changes?

Just so nobody takes Heavenly's post the wrong way--she does NOT drip in 5 gallons of Calcium!! I believe that would be 5 gallons with a Calcium additive.

    byrself--a specific question for you

thanks--that width thing was what I was interested in--I e-mailed the seller on that e-bay site and hopefully he will have an answer for me--our tank could manage the 8.5 wide light but not really the 11--due to it being 12 inches deep and some clearance is needed for the filter, etc. thanks for...
