My first inclination is that the damsels may be bothering the fish when you are not around.
How are the water levels? Butterflies want absolutely pristine conditions.
I love Coralife's metal halide fixture, which has either a single or double halide for a 48" tank. It also has actinics and moonlights and puts out a ton of light.
Current also makes a good fixture that has built halides with T-5 actinics.
Both are excellent lights but you are looking at about...
It's interesting, Saltwaterfish.com is actually in the top 27% of message boards ranked on the internet according to http://rankings.big-boards.com!
I have actually heard of this. A good friend of mine actually traded his hippo into his LFS because it was wiping out his clean-up crew.
Another friend of mine got rid of his sailfin and foxface because he saw both of them rip at his corals multiple times.
Strange things do happen...

I have had the same problems with Apstasia X and Joe's Juice. Gotta be really careful...
They are extremely cool fish, but they murdered you on the price. There is no way that they should have cost you this much. They are $300 in my area...

This is exactly what I do as well. Makes everything a lot easier and helps with the coral's acclimation as well.
As stated, stay on top of the issue and get rid of things that are causing the red slime to grow in your aquarium. The more water changes you do, and the more you remove it, the faster you will get rid of it.

Someone came on and posted negative things in order to try and cause a stir.
Standard water changes will only help if the OP is using a "reef salt"; one that already has buffered calcium and alkalinity (like Tropic Marin, Oceanic, Reef Crystals, etc.)
Both of those levels need to come up quite a bit to begin coralline algae growth.
