Yea, its pretty easy to so. The Silicone I by GE is safe to use. As said, get all the silicone out. Take a rag and rubbing alcohol and clean the seams very well. You'll also want to get the blue painters tape from home depot and tape off all the lines so it looks neat.

How big of a water change did you do? Cleaning the junk out of the wet/dry will not lower the nitrates, it will only remove what is producing nitrates. I use the frontline spray on my dog. It works great and is much cheaper than the little tubes.

I have not used either of those personally but have heard good things about the NWB 110. In general, the stand alones work better than HOB.
