    OT: new car baby!

Nissan's are great cars - I currently have a Ford (and hate it) and am getting ready to trade it on a nissan altima - I have had two Nissans (a Sentra and a pickup truck) both cars lasted well over 100k miles, never did any maintainence except for normal stuff, never had a problem with either...

    water movement

My two cents - save the money you would spend on a powerfilter, and build a DIY sump - it would probably be pretty close to the same price and you will be alot happier with it - try doing some searching in the DIY section - you should get lots of posts on building a sump. Running a skimmer in...

    Reflective paint

I don't know if home depot sells it - I go to the local paint store for this paint - might want to try there first. I know Home Depot sells the Elastomere paint. If you can't find titanium white any flat white will do, but you want it to be a cool white, rather then a warm.(No eggshell white or...

    sand cleaner

The turbos won't touch your sand at all - for good sand cleaners check out nassarius snails and cerith snails - conches are also good sand cleaners.

brown algea is driving me nuts!!!

I wish I could help with the different colors - I am red/green color blind (so brown and green look pretty much identical to me) so I couldn't tell you what colors appeared when and at what point. I know that it did change color (remember the wife asking me about it) but don't know if it went...

    water movement

Well you learn something new everyday - your post made me curious since I had not heard any negatives on carbon - I found this -I stole from another site(not other message board) - link provided on request,no author listed. "How Often Should Carbon be Used? The two main concerns about using...

brown algea is driving me nuts!!!

My opinion - 25% water change, and patience :) As terrible as that is to say, the algea is a normal part of the initial cycle, it will go away eventually. When I experienced the inital algea bloom after my cycle, performing a water change, adding a small clean up crew and waiting about two weeks...

    Reflective paint

I would suggest titanium white paint(best) or another flat white paint - it supposedly is able to reflect 75-85% of light - I would not recommend a gloss paint, while it may appear "brighter" gloss paint only reflects approximately 55-60% of light. You could also use Elastomere paint, it is a...

    sand cleaner

What type of clean up crew do you already have? Or do you not have one? What is the tank going to be? FOWLR? Reef?

    water movement

I know what you mean on the aquaclears - they aren't very efficient from my experience, I have a 55 with an emperor 400 (had two aqualclear 3000's) and I wasn't happy with the movement either, I switched the aquaclears to maxijet900's and am very happy now. I do run carbon in my powerfilter to...

Set-up Question (a quick reply would be appreciated)

Are you running any type of filter? When I converted my cc to a dsb it was a cloudy mess, running fresh carbon in my filter for about 16 hours cleared it up, by the next day the water was totally clear (had to do a major scrubbing of the filter to get all the sand out tho)

    Undergravel filters...please advise

Welcome to the boards :) Crushed coral is alright, but if you are going to use some live sand anyway I would suggest just doing a deep sand bed, it acts as a biofilter in addition to your LR. Not to mention construction of a DSB seeded with live sand is substantially lower then using crushed...

    OT: No spam

Aarone - no they use a program called a spider - it basically cruises throughout the net looking for what ever data the user of the program would like - a lot of search engines use the same type of technology. This site isn't as important to enter the NOSPAM simply because the message board is...

    feather duster reproduction

I doubt you could get the big ones to reproduce in a home style setup - they release a plakton like larva that swims, pretty much food for everything else in our tanks. The other type (the small ones) break a piece off and that new piece is a new duster, which is why we see them multiply pretty...

Tank is looking awesome, it looks like you have really done your research and taken your time to set it up. I hope you keep posting photos as it progresses.

    Hair algae and lights

When I had CC the turbos seemed to do an ok job, just in a tank with sand they really don't go after anything in the sand bed, and i think the hermits get most off the rock, so the snail is all by himself getting the leftovers. I didn't have CC for long enough to recommend a clean up crew for...

    Hair algae and lights

Personally I could care less about the Turbos, the ones I have/had didn't seem to do much other then hang out on the rock work and occasionally clean the glass, I currently only have one turbo left, and switching all my snails to nassarius and cerith. If your LFS does not sell them you may want...

    Hair algae and lights

Col - I swear you need to stop posting, it seems like every time you post about a problem in your tank, it pops up in mine not more then a week later. Finally got rid of the cyano problem I was having a couple weeks ago (thanks to your advice, it was a bad batch of water, phosphates were reading...

    base rock ?

The time will vary on base rock becoming Live Rock, since there are multiple factors you have to take into consideration. A tank that is comprised of a DSB of LS, 80% LR, with the remaining 20% being baserock, would seed the baserock a lot faster then a tank full of dead coral, one or two pieces...
