    Power Sweep Powerheads

I only know of one person that still uses his. He stays on top of cleaning it and uses the sponge prefilter. Regardless the output isn't that great. If you have a strong sump pump, you would be better off with putting a sea swirl on the return.

I'm a little confused about this switch. If the switch kicks on when the water level gets too low, how does the resevoir flow stop from getting too high in the sump? Is this swithc electric?? Does it plug into a regular outlet. What is the switch conected too, an electronic valve...

    Urgent! Got RemoraPro and Prefilter

heh. Broomer your funny. Ugly as sin! Hell, that could be worth a shot though. If not, and if rio is out, aren't there ~other~ pumps out there that may work well? You may pay a premium for the name, but the first one that came to mind for me was an Eheim. Looking at their site, the 1250 is rated...

Wolffvet, I bought the reservoir and switch out of FAMA mag for about $50-60. The switch was a all plastic mechanical deal. It clipped on the side of your sump. You put a velcro strip on the sump and adjusted the switch height by moving it up and down on the velcro. Some people get spooked by...

Evap! That's a good point H20, I spaced it. I dealt with it by having a 5 gallon reservoir connected to a float switch in the sump. It would last over a week. Threw some kalk in it and I was good to go.

    Help with filtration / Refugium

Oneflysi, If you don't have a sump going already then I would urge that you get an overflow. The problem with the two powerhead combo is the danger of the one in the refugium getting clogged or getting turned off. If this happens, you are screwed and will have major water damage as the other...

Galina that's not stupid at all. You can get waterproof endcaps by themselves for a lot of bulbs out there. Or you can cut a balloon and stretch it over the gaps for a cheap alternative. You have to replace the balloons every now and then. Coralife also sells 'e-z ballasts' which come with...

How Can I Quiet Down my Tank? Please Help Me!!!

Mine never smelled or got real damp. I had it going a couple years and then gave it to a friend before I moved to New York and got a different tank altogether. He still has the tank and has never told me that he replaced it. But if need be, it would be cheap to do so.

Dangerous Salt Mixes / Terry B

Thanks for getting back to me Terry and the link Broomer. I gotta read that when I have time. Terry I subscribe to your water changing techniques myself and I used to just drip kalk and dose strontium and iodine(with the skimmer off!). This recent article did close I believe, with don't dose at...

Dangerous Salt Mixes / Terry B

Ok. Here are the references cited in the FAMA article: Atkinson, M. and Bingman, C. 1999. The Composition of Several Synthetic Seawater Mixes. March 1999 Aquarium Frontiers On-line. Shimek, R.L. 2001. Reef Ecosystems, Necessary Nutrition. Aquarium Fish Magazine. 13 (2) 42-53.

    skimmer only?!

I am not sold on the 'nitrate factory' rep. wet/drys get, BUT... If you have a lot of quality live rock (porous/light,etc, from a good source) somewhere in the neighborhood of 1+ to 2 lbs per gallon and a good sand bed, either live, or good quality dry sand - it will eventually be live - THEN...

How Can I Quiet Down my Tank? Please Help Me!!!

You can use a piece of that foamy/rubbery ergonomic stuff from a computer shop. It goes in front of your computer keyboard and is supposed to help with carpal tunnel syndrome. Cut a piece of that, or something similar and put the pump on it. Buy some dimpled foam matting that goes on top of a...

Dangerous Salt Mixes / Terry B

Whoa. I just took a look at that link. The s15 report pretty much says all the salts I have used over the years were deficient to dangerous next to natural sea water. This is becoming quite an eye opener.

I am not sure Madd Catt. The reference says it was from some study published in 1999, does that sound right? I can't remember the name of it though. Where's Terry by the way??

    Filter Question: Eheim model 2227

This is what I had to say yesterday about a similar question: Eheim makes great stuff, I have used their canisters before, but I would think twice before going that route. That model is cool, I mean a wet/dry canister, that's cool. Problem is, if you ever want to upgrade like I did, you don't...

Dangerous Salt Mixes / Terry B

Terry, You said the other day that you write for FAMA. I was wondering if you could perhaps shed some light on that trace elements article in the new FAMA. The article states that 'several' common salt mixes contain near toxic levels of lead, cadmium and other metals. The writer thinks that this...

    Help with filtration / Refugium

Hey taku, I like that the tank in that link has bed foam in the stand, I did that too. It really keeps the sound down and it's way cheap. Oneflysi, I have been seeing a lot of deep refugiums with not much caulerpa, to me, this defeats the purpose. I like the old-school 'algae scrubber' style...

sponge too big for tank! (goes very off topic)

God, too think last night I wasted 40 minutes following some super-geeks battle it out over restrictors on r.o. units. This is infinately more entertaining. Mr. Bubbles, I don't care if you are trying to sell shoreline, you are pretty f***ing funny dude... <img src="graemlins//urrr.gif"...
