Topic: water changes. Why?

I forgot to mention that a protein skimmer will remove a lot of good stuff from your water too. But I still like skimmers! :D

    Topic: water changes. Why?

Heh. Dad, I am not a chemist either. I was a film major, ok? What the hell do I know? ;) I am going under the assumption that we are talking about what is in the salt mix you buy. I am not talking about just sodium. All common salt mixes contain their witches brew of elements to emulate...

    Topic: water changes. Why?

dad, (this is creepy that I have to call you 'dad.' you are not my dad!) Magnesuium, strontium, iodine, calcium, potassium, etc. all would be at lower levels in your old salt than the new salt I would think. These elements are all part of a healthy reef I believe, and need to be replenished. I...

    Topic: water changes. Why?

Sammy, You are careful with your words and try to do the IMO thing as much as possible as I ~try~ to do (failing now and then), I just want to give you a little ribbing (hey it's friday!) for saying that there aren't any unnatural foods being thrown in the ocean. :D IMO, there are! Everyday...

    Topic: water changes. Why?

In minute amounts of toxins, wouldnt most animals adapt their immune systems to them

Corals do apparently to some extent with metals. It is called 'sequestering' I think. I believe it is when you overload their capacity to do so that they die. I am no expert here though, that is...

Holes in returns to prevent siphon

I used mine for over 3 years and never cleaned it. It never failed. But I was being pretty stupid. I should have done it the couple times I broke down my tank to move it. They are designed to come apart pretty easily. If you get one make sure to follow the recommendations on this thread and...

    Clown in Reef Tank Yes/No?

I have this link for a site that matches anemones with clowns: http://www.keil.ukans.edu/ebooks/intro.html Problem is, it has a lot of latin and it's old. IDEA: Anyone know of similar sites, but geared towards reefers??? I...

    Choosing a canister filter

I suppose you could, but I would recommend just a using a powerhead with hose on it or a sump pump instead. Canister filters need to be below what ever is feeding it to get gravity to feed the siphon. Why are you looking at canister filters anyway?

    Filter

Sounds like a 'fluidized bed' filter.

    Choosing a canister filter

I had Eheim canisters. I can't say anything bad about them. Period. Maybe the price I guess, you pay for the name a little bit. But I highly recommend them. They are completely silent. I didn't have the newer kinds with the self priming handles though, couldn't tell you about them. All I can...

    Pods and glass cleaning?

I was thinking of the spiral micro feather duster thing. When I saw the word 'shell' in this thread that is why I thought of annalids. But taking another look, if these are just 'bugs' then it probably is copepods, amphipods or some kind of 'pod.' I have seen them with the lights on, but never...

    Pods and glass cleaning?

When I meant pods, I meant little white wormy critters and tiny white specs that darted around. Don't know if they are considered pods proper, but I don't know what else to call them.

Annalids.

Holes in returns to prevent siphon

Why not use a check valve instead of drilling holes in your return line?

    what to use

The biggest problem with Chemi-Pure is the price. It can polish your water pretty well and take the yellow out. I used Chemi-Pure, but I have heard that Black Diamond is as good and cheaper. And it can be reused after rinsing! Unless you got some ozone action going on, you really don't need...

    Leaving the lights on.....or off?

I had to use a heavy duty grounded timer to get my halide to kick in, is yours the three prong kind?

High phospates, dieing, and IK 3 part question

Iv had this tank for about a year now. Done one water change.

Holy crap. I missed that the first time. I hope that is a typo. Dude! You gotta do more water changes. Not massive water changes at once, just more of them. Commonly people do around 25% a month, or small ones every...

High phospates, dieing, and IK 3 part question

High phosphates- Test your water like Birdy suggested. If you can rule out water, look at your feeding habits. You might need to cut back. Overfeeding can raise your phosphates. Flower Pot Coral- Lighting and water conditions appear to be critical to this coral. One source said it had to be feed...

    Boo on pets warehouse!

What happened to righing a wrong with a right? This just shows that the real threats are not the sharks in the water, but the ones on land!! Hey Novak, don't buy any McDonald's coffee, I hear it is real hot!!

Minimum recommended time after mixing water?

If you can wait a day or so that's best. Powerheads are great, but airstones should be mentioned to help the water equal out with atmospheric gases, temp., etc.. If you already have a tank with fish, you might want to use a heater too.
