DSB article

Found this link on another board and thought I'd share the link as there are increasing posts reference using different kinds of sand for DSB's. http://www.rshimek.com/reef/sediment.htm The article is by Dr. Ron Shimek as you...

    DIY live rock

I have read that the concrete rocks will leech out some excess chems for a while. So I thought it would be o.k. to use the toilet tank as there are "constant water changes", ;) then after a week or so, cure it in a tub with saltwater. Just what I have read elsewhere, I have no data to back...

    Poll: coral fragging and propagating

This would be a good idea for beginners and experienced. NM reef (sorry man, you're the only example I could think of) had a problem with one of his corals a while ago, he had to basically frag it to save it. It would be nice to have a forum where information like this could help save someones...

    will this work for DSB???

Wally is right on. Silicate sand will not harm your tank, if you practice good reef keeping and watch your water chem. you should have no problems with any substrate you use. The main thing when considering sand is the grain size. The other debate is whether aragonite helps with buffering...

    DIY live rock

I made some rock about a week ago with portland white cement, and was wondering how long I need to let it cure before I put it in the toilet tank to cure in H2o? Anyone done this before? The rocks turned out really nice, and I don't want to ruin them by curing them in water too soon.

    Seattle Area Reefers

Anyone want to trade something for a NICE tank raised hippo? He's getting big for my 80 reef. Eats like a PIG, no probs with ick, won't touch greens or selects. He loves squid and krill soaked in zoe, actually he likes anything soaked in zoe. :D He's probably close to 4-5". Excellent...

    feeding an open brain

Try a search. I searched the BB using "feeding open brain." I found 16 threads. https://www.saltwaterfish.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=12&t=005330 <a...

    Kalkwasser alternatives?

I use kent turbo calcium and super buffer. Great growth and speading. I have never tried kalk so I have no info or opinion there. Capt'n Ed is right, the turbo is bad if it lands on stuff undisolved, but I dose in my sump, if you have no sump you can just mix it with a cup of tank water for a...

    Just venting.........

Yeah it will be fine, especially if you are going to cure it yourself again, which it sounds like. Mine takes 2 days to get to me too if I order it on-line, they ship fed ex ground.

    Poll: coral fragging and propagating

Anyone out there be interested in posting what corals they fragged / propped. 1. What it was 2. How you did it 3. What materials you used, glue, zip ties, cheese cloth etc. 4. Re-attachment to lr etc. 5. outcome, problems, thing you'll do different next time etc. Maybe it could be it's own...

    Sea Urchins

most are safe, I won't say all, but I have never had one that ate coral or anything like that. They eat algae, a lot of algae. They will eat coraline algae as well. They don't really bother stuff other than by knocking it over or moving it. I have had them before with no problems of coral /...

    Superglue

Any glue that is cyanoacrylate based will work, and gel is easier to manage, as stated before. I've had sucess on toadstools with superglue gel, and obviously stoney corals. The whole rock doesn't need to be dried, you can just dab it dry where you apply glue. You can do it wet, but it's more...

    TOADSTOOL

go to garf.org. Do some searching there. They have a step by step of how to prop leathers, specifically toadstools. Great info. I've done it several times to mine with no problems what so ever. My propped golden toadstool polyps are actually green from feeding DT's! (I'm assuming here.) ;)

    elegance coral

I've had mine for about a year. I have it high up on the rocks in medium current. I only have pc lights. I feed mine silver sides, squid and krill soaked in zoe. I dose DT's too. It has really grown large since I got it. Borneman has some really great info on them, both in his book(s) and...

    Need advice for another coral

A nice open brain of any color would go well. Even a smaller lobo would be ok. They are easy and just need food and decent light. Some of my fav's.

    Brain Coral!

I have several brains and a lobo, and a hammer. They are all pretty hardy. Just have to keep them fed and good light. The one thing to watch for in the hammers is the sweeper tentacles. They will send them out if another coral is too close. Just give the hammer plenty of room and they will...
