i think you are looking to do something that acts like a fluidized sand bed filter - which i dont know tons about except that large operations use them in enclosed cylinders and not in open Sump type situatuions. do some research on those first i suggest.

are there any hiding places in the tank for it?

well mysid shrimp is pretty nutritious and if the pellets are spectrum, that is a high qaulity food. however i do agree variety is great, and i make my own food as well, nothing is better for them and they go nuts for it IMO
