I just saw an interesting post about using your old hang on filter for a small fuge.(good idea chandler) My question is what do you put in it to get started? Do I need substrate and LR, or just LR and macro's? And where do you get the macro's? Do they sell them on this site? Thanks

I have a yellow tail coris or wrasse in my 55 gal. I have heard that they tend to prey on snails, crabs and starfish. I haven't really seen any evidence of this other than he moves things around sometimes on the bottom. But I want to add some kind starfish to my tank, to help with the cleaner...

Just curious.... If you junk the biowheel, do you still need to use a carbon filter? I took my biowheels off and left the filter running, to make use of the carbon inserts, is this bad?

That's a good question. My new cleaner is kinda the same way. He hides in the back of the tank. My Clark II clown goes up to him all the time and its like he's closed for business or something. Anyone have any suggestions??

Your suggestion was more what I was thinking about too. When my friend asked that question, I tried to remeber all the aquariums that I had visited that had jellies and their setup. And I even broke out pictures that I had taken to go over to see the tank, etc. I don't think he will really try...

ok, thanks. I use RO water to topoff. Nobody sells RO/DI and I don't have a unit yet. I have never tested the RO water before but its worth a try. I am going to take some water to a couple of different LFS to see what results I get this weekend. Thanks for all the suggestions.

ok Took the biowheel off last night. The emporer is still running, because I like the to run carbon and poly filters. I will check levels in a couple of days to see if there is any change. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the replies... I have done water changes on a weekly basis and reduced feeding. And this has only affected the results slightly. So that is why I asked about the kit. I have also seen opinons about the emporer filters and the bio-wheels being a nitrate trap. I don't have a refugium...

That's the thing. I read the instructions several times to see if I was doing something wrong. And it still is high. I may try a different kit or take it to LFS and see what happens.

The answer to your question, IMO, is yes and no. The LR will help with filtration of your water, but not entirely. And it won't entirely clean up your water either. What are the water params for your water? e.g. ammonia, nitrites, etc. What is your substrate? And what livestock do you have in...
