There are products that can keep your reef at 8.3. I was having trouble at the beginning with my nano's pH and started using this during my water changes. The pH has stayed pretty constant since I started doing that.

When brine shrimp hatch the water they hatch in will have huge, and I mean huge, amounts of nitrates. Just get the brine shrimp nets and transport them that way. From what I remember if you test the water after they hatch you'll see 100+ nitrate.

Yes, it looks more like a toadstool than a leather. Although the 'top' of the coral isn't flat like the toadstool. It's more spherical.

Kind of sounds like it could be a "Closed Brain" instead of an "Open Brain". Those are two different types of Brains. If you do a search for Closed Brain you'll probably be able to find a couple pictures. I'm in no way even close to being an expert, this is just to give you a possible direction.
