    mantis? Sharks please help me!

After I lost my 1st (lost 3) pep shrimp I listened very hard for 'clicks' because I heard them alot. Turned out that some of them (but not all :() were the heater turning on and off, the thermometer clicking against the heater, and snails retracting into their shells while on the glass. I just...

First piece of Coraline on my glass just appeared

Herbie, coraline is indeed the hard stuff that grows on the rock. It can also grow on glass and it is hard there too. When I said I didn't want to touch it so it wouldn't fall off, I was saying that as a small joke like "I didn't want to drive my new car and get it dirty" type joke.

Ok, picking it up tonight. I love getting small little frags for $10 ... it's something I don't feel to guilty about.

My tank is a death trap for peppermints

Q, no overflow. The only thing mechanical in my nano is my powersweeper. I don't think they could get sucked in the 1/8th inch holes. I'm hoping they are still around.

First piece of Coraline on my glass just appeared

Well, I have a very small purple spot on the side of my tank! I'm 90% sure it's coraline algea but I don't want to touch it just in case I make it fall off :). I'm pretty geeked. The tank has been up for a month and a half now. I need to get my cable for my camcorder so I can transfer the...

Purple mat with green 'polyps?' coming out of tubes ... ID

There's about a 2x1 inch purple mat with 1/4 inch tubes, also purple, that have green polyps/fingers that come out of them at the LFS. Beautiful. Only $10 and I'd like to look into what they are and what they would require so I can decide if I can support them in my nano. Anyone have an ID or...

    Bristle Worms

I found my first bristle worm the other night. It was about 2-3 inches long with a red/brown 1 inch front and a black 1-2 inch back. I was so excited I yelled for my wife to come. "You're excited about a worm?!" She then walked away shaking her head :).

My tank is a death trap for peppermints

They could be hiding but I'm not sure. The first guy I had stayed in one spot 90% of the time (was it his hiding place? *shrug*). Then one day he was gone. I picked up the cleaner shrimp after that because I wanted the flickering of antenna and this shrimp was giving me the wiggles at the...

My tank is a death trap for peppermints

Well I lost a peppermint shrimp, one of my first additions, withing a couple days after introducing him a while ago. Just vanished, and this was before I had the brittle star. Everything else has survived and is 100% intact. I wanted to see if I could get a couple pepps to spawn so I picked...

    Is this enough fish....

Take all the money you were going to spend on the damsels and clownfish and buy as much rock (figi) as you can. This will cycle your tank better and faster than the fish would plus you'll have all that quality live rock. My two favorite fish are the: MANDARIN Pterosynchiropus splendidus...

    Is this enough fish....

I would not cycle my tank that way. Infact, that would probably be to many fish in that tank if it were cycled already. The best and fastest way to cycle it would be just to put in the right amount of live rock and sand. If it's a 175 gallon and you want to make a reef out of it then you are...

    Xenias not lookin so great

NM is right about the using Xenia as an early warning system. There are a few things that come to my mind though. 1) Candy Cane is sending out feelers and is stinging the Xenia. Is the CC a recent addition, or has it been growing? 2) My Xenia closes up every now and then for no reason. I'll...

    Turbo snails suck....

Turbos are pretty bad at that. I've found that they have a pretty good survival rate if you acclimate well then hand feed seaweed to them at the beginning. They get strong and then don't fall off :).

One bubble of bubble algea, help me remove please :)

Well the damned bubble was hard as a rock and I popped it. So I did a freshwater dip on that portion of the frag rock. Hopefully that will kill any/all the spores.

    Look! Live rock pics

When you get it, take some pictures right away then at a month or so and post them. I'll be putting my 75 gallon together between now and Christmas and would love to get some good rock.

    which corals for beginners?

I personnally like Xenia. One of the main reasons is that you can almost visably see it grow. That is one major encouragement when you can see your stuff grow.
