    probably a stupid question

The majority of gas exchange is at the surface of the water, not from air bubblers. It is important to have good circulation so more water comes in contact with the surface. Air stones are frowned upon mainly if you have corals. The tiny air bubbles can interfere with the corals ability to...

    Please Help ...water Condition!!

Cloudy water and red algae(cyano?). Could possibly be a bacterial bloom. How much and how often do you feed all those fish? And what are the nitrate readings? High dissolved organic compounds could cause the yellowing of the water. Try running some fresh carbon and doing another water change and...

Use of Chemi-Clean in a reef tank

I did not use chemi-clean, but used Red Slime Remover. My flowerpot had a dramatic reaction within 20 mins. It retracted completely for 24 hours. I was starting to get worried, but it slowly started expanding, and after 4 days, it is fully expanded again and happy as ever. All of my other corals...

Good deal on salt at *****

Yeah, the Red Sea Salt manufacturer must be putting on a promotion. I just bought a couple 150 gallon boxes from a pet supply warehouse for $15.95. Now that was a deal. The ***** around here is not offering it cheap. I have enough now for awhile, so I don't care.

    lighting replacement

Sorry Jon, don't know exactly what type of ballast it is. It is from custom sealife if that helps. I bought the ballast used and it is in a black metal box labeled "Powers 2 250 watt mh bulbs. by custom sealife" I am guess it is a standard magnetic ballast. Just a little ignorant here. What I do...

    Zebra Hermit Crabs

I have a few of them in my tank. They are quite active, and not nearly as aggresive as my bluelegs. I think they would be a good addition to your clean up crew as they are contstantly picking at the lr and substrate. I get a kick out them. They like to climb to the highest LR inthe tank and sun...

    lighting replacement

I recently replaced my 250w halides. I had blueline 10k's and replaced them with Ushio 10k's. They are supplemented with 2 actinic pc's and 2 10k pc's. I am really glad that I went with Ushio. IMO the Ushio's crisp white looks better, not so blue. Mh bulbs should be replace every 12- 14 months...

    No Feeding Instuction!

Hermit crabs are scavengers that eat left over food, algae, detritus. It is possible, that there isn't anything for them to eat. Also, do you have some empty shells for them. They out grow shells and need replacements. What are your water parameter. Amm, trites, trates, ph, alk, etc. Poor water...

    Want to do saltwater

A good site for info on reef keeping, other then this site(which is excellent), is WWW.reefcorner.com. Click on the reefkeeping 101 link. The best thing to do is to get a book and read. Go to the library or buy a book. The more research the better. Making mistakes can cost alot. Salt tanks are...

    Purple Algea??

That looks like red slime algae, cyano bacteria. It is a real pain to get rid of. High nutients in the water, poor lighting, lack of current are all causes. I would suggest making sure your skimmer is working good, do a water change or two and increase current to the affected areas. Make sure...

    Am I Doomed?

IMO a skimmer could help prevent a problem. If you have 6 in clearance between the wall and tank, and don't want to spend a bundle on a skimmer, you could get a sea clone. I think they are about a $100 including pump. They aren't great , but are good for the price.

    Replacing halide bulbs

I have 2 - 250 watt halides that are about 12 months old. I have ordered 2 new 10k Ushio bulbs. They should be here tomorrow, and I was wondering if there is a big difference in intensity between the old ones and the new. What I am getting at is, do I have to acclimate the tank with a shorter...

    major red slime outbreak AGAIN

I recently started a battle with the dreaded red slime. It is a coincidence I think, but I started getting cyano shortly after I set up a refugium with caulerpa. If anything, the caulerpa should help reduce nitrates and DOC in the water, but who knows.. I am on a mission to get rid of it and am...

    Refuium LIghting

I have a 22 gal rubbermaid that is lit by one 15 watt and one 20 watt regular flourescent bulbs, and one 15 watt aquarium and plant flourescent. My razor and grape is growing like crazy and is pruned regularily. Pod population is good also. In fact, the purple coralline is growing faster in the...

    astrea snails

I purchased some astrea snaails from SWF and I was really surprised how well they cleaned up the algae. Just make sure you acclimate them slowly for the best chance of survival. I would go with them.

    Tank Heat

Your temp is just fine. I keep mine at 78-80 and everything is doing good. Just try to keep the temp stable. Tempurature swings are stressful to life in the tank.

    Coralline Question

I remember reading a thread in the last few weeks. It may be what you have in your tank. It was descibed as a filter feeding organism. I can't remember what it was called. Maybe someone who responded to that post can come up with a name. If you are talking about what I am thinking of, it is a...
