I was also thinking about comparing this hobby to others. Consider golf. After the initial cost of setting up the tank and stocking, I don't think maintainence is that bad. Golf on the other hand must cost more over the long haul.
People ask me what kind of tank I have and how long I've had it. I answer, they say, "Ohhh salt water tanks are hard to keep". I've had my 55 set up for 2 years now. I'm putting up a 75 right now. This is turning into a pet peeve. Anyone else think this?
Thanks to everyone who voted. We went with the rectangular. The closest bowfront was 1.5 hours away and I didn't want to take a chance on breakage. I'm running my RO/DI now. It's taking for ever. Here's a pic of the new tank.
Something doesn't sound right. That sg should be fine for everything in your tank. I have my 55 at 1.024 and everything is fine. It's usually sudden shifts that cause problems. I'm sorry about your fish and crab. Good Luck
Since you don't have any fish yet, I think you're trying to do it the hard way. I would dissolve salt in a plastic cup, maybe 1/2 cup in 12 oz of ro water. Then add to the 55 until it has the right sg. Your trying to raise the sg by .3%.
I have an automatic feeder on my 55. I got it at walmart. About $10. It clamps onto the top edge of the tank. It's set at the smallest amount of food and drops it in twice a day. It works pretty well. I don't think you will have a problem for just a week. (Please don't flame me :scared...
Last time I was at the LFS, they said it's ok to keep a blue tang, yellow tang, trigger, and clown :scared: in a 55 because of "improved filtration". Some people might think they are experts. (This isn't my tank)
