I also recently have this problem. The sand forms a matt with gas bubbles all over it then gets darker and thicker by the hour.
I've been shuting the pumps off and bull dozing it with a fish net. Im sure there must be a better solution.
You can take fine fishing line and wrap dried algae to a rock REAL tight. Wrap the string around into a grid pattern.
Takes about 2 days to pick it clean.
I would have someone turn the lights on and off.
That would explain the hair algae then :notsure: I need an RO, tap water gives me Red Slime.
Thats odd the week after I stopped using Culligan the Green Hair went away.
When mine disappears for a few days its time to check the over-flow. It's amazing what they can go through.
First time I found him on the pre-filter he had been missing over a week. It looked like a brown ball of snot--as I was thumping him into the toilet I saw some movement.

Everything looks to be doing better. My xenia are snapping open and shut like they are on speed or something almost freakishly fast. I'm worried about my palys, one colony was shut on one side.
It's amazing I thought these new lights I bought where a bit yellow--the charcoal changed all...
I was losing some clarity. So I did a 20% water change and threw a bag of charcoal in my canister filter. Guess I'll take it out when the water clears up.
I think the set up you described is what it comes with. I would think you can put any 65 watt bulb that will fit the pin configuration in it (sqaure pin I think).
I have one that has x2 130 watt bulbs that you described and the only option I have found is sunpaq. They also have a 10k bulb.
