looking for good lighting in chicago area

I've got a 48" coralife aqualight that I am not using since I switched to a smaller tank. It's been used for about 6 months and it is like-new condition. It has two fans (inflow/outflow) and two power cords so you can put them on separate timers. Everything is in excellent working order, I...

    New octopus!!

Sorry guys, I got my info from a combination of a diving guide in Australia and a friend of mine from Australia who was a Paramedic and diver there. I knew that they were very poisonous but it appears that there are some misconceptions about them. I agreed with you until I talked to those two...

    New octopus!!

Blue Ring octos are very poisonous, but it is very rare that you would die from them. If you are bit (their bite can go through a wet suit) you just need to keep the airway open. The have a neuro toxin that could eventually paralize you, including your respiratory muscles, but a human can...

    Digital Camera Choice??

I use a Nikon coolpix 5400. The retail is kinda scary, but i found mine for $500 on www.digitaliquidators.com. Some people don't like these places cuz some don't have warranties. This place has Nikon US warranties though. Just watch out, they have pushy salespeople on the phone.

    cobb web on the brain!

when corals get irritated, usually by sand, they produce a muccus coat around whatever is irritating them. This coat gets the sand off of the tissue and allows it to be blown away. Looks like some sand was on your brain and it took care of things on its own. Great looking brain by the way!!! :D

Anyone know what this coral is?

I might have to disagree. I think that the "big" one is a Cinarena, or Modern, coral. It kinda looks like a bubble but doesn't have the actual bubbles and does have a conspicuous mouth. At least, that's my opinion.

    need help with new sump

I am assuming that you are using a hang on overflow and your tank is not plumbed. In that case, it's just a matter of starting the siphon. the way I did mine, was to submurge the whole tube in the water, plug one end with a bathtub stopper or something and hook it back up to where it's supposed...

Finally got some pics of my new tank!

I really like the canopy design. Great woodworking. Do you have any other lights in there besides the halides? Also, so you want to explain exactly how the canpy is set up. Love the tank and keep us posted once you get your camera back. I have a Nikon too and love it!

    pics of you guys!

Half the people I work with are deathly afraid of needles. They give 50 shots a day but just freak out if they are supposed to get them. Funny how that stuff works :p

Leopard_babe You are a nurse and aren't even 21 yet?? Please say you are a RN. I still have two years of school left in my RN program and I am 21! I feel slow. I know what you mean about the whole nurse uniform turn on thingy. I work in the ICU where we get almost as much blood and "other...

    how safe/wise?

I say go right ahead and put both of them in. My peppermints have been just fine and have never touched any of my polyps or other corals. I have heard of isolated cases where they will attack Yellow polyps but that is because of their very close similarity to aptasia. I have never heard of any...

    Quick Fuge Qs

Do you have to put the fuge above the main tank? The whole point is to circulate the water through the sump and fuge, right? If you were to pump up the water from the fuge wouldn't it chew up the pods, etc that you want. Ok, so maybe its a lot of questions. I am just having trouble seeing how...

    OT Tigers as pets?

I think both Buzz and NatureLover hit it on the head. Tigers and Lions and other big cats the people like to keep (Cougars, Leapards, etc.) are just too big for any one person to safely keep. The studies done in Russia on Siberian Tigers is really opening some eyes. The range of a female tiger...
