    Haitian Live Rock???

I paid $4/lb at a local LFS and feel that I got ripped off. The rock that I got has great shapes and lots of caves but little to no life or coralline algea. I thought that maybe I got a bad batch but I saw some Haitian at another LFS and it looked identical to mine and they were selling it as...

    How much lighting for ricordea?

I'm finally getting my new lights tomorrow (72" 4x95 PCs) so my ricordea has been under normal aquarium lights that I've scrounged from old tanks. I have them about 6" under the surface putting them about 12" under the light. I have 2 20watt and 1 30 watt bulbs right now (normal output...

Info on Yellowlined basslet (gramma linki)?

From what I've read, as long as they are in a large tank (100+) and have lots of caves/rockwork, they'll be okay. I've got each end of the tank set up as a "wall" type reef with lots of caves. The blackcap lives on the left so hopefully they'll pick their own territories. I'll find out soon...

Info on Yellowlined basslet (gramma linki)?

I have the opportunity to pick up a Yellowlined Basslet but I'm not finding a lot of information on them. Does anyone have any experience with them? It will be going into a 125g reef that has the following: 7 Green Chromis 1 Blackcap Basslet 1 Flame Hawk 2 neon blue gobies 2 cleaner shrimp 3...

    My turbo snails

They were probably hungry. Mine will sit in one place for hours on end and next time I look, they've re-arranged themselves. I think they suffer from narcolepsy and just fall asleep wherever they happen to be when the urge hits them.

    Crab ID?

Great ideas! Thanks. I got a Dremel tool for Christmas so maybe I'll take the wooden dowel and sharpen the finishing nail and go [hr] fishing. I fed the smaller one a piece of shrimp with tweezers and he grabbed it and ran down his hole. If I don't injure myself with the tool or stab...

    Crab ID?

I've been able to identify the smaller one. It appears to be a gorilla crab. It has sharp claws that are black with a white tip. The bigger one doesn't have the black claws but they appear to be sharp also. I tried the baited glass trick but only caught hermits. I tried a freshwater dip on the...

    Crab ID?

I just found 2 of these crabs on my 1 month old live rock. This is the bigger of the two. His body is about 1 cm across with an oval shape. Both claws appear to be the same size. The underside of the claws are white and he appears to be much lighter on his underside. There appear to be...

    Do I need a top-off unit anymore?

I drip either top-off or kalk. I'm only dripping Kalk every other day right now (because I let it set for 24 hours after mixing). Later, when I start making larger batches of Kalk, I'll drip both. It'll take some experimenting to determine the ratio but I'll probably start at .75 gal Kalk...

how many have hawks with shrimp?

I have both but voted for peppermint since they are the smaller and more timid of the group. I have 1 flame hawk and 3 peppermint and 2 cleaner. I've only had the hawk for about 2 weeks so there is still plenty of time for him to make an expensive meal. The only time I've seen any aggression is...

    Yeast in food

I’ve seen several recipes for making your own frozen fish food that include yeast. But I’ve also noticed that several commercial fish foods state “does not contain yeast”. Is yeast bad? Does anyone know of any articles/studies/sources of information regarding yeast in fish food? If I drop pure...

    Ricordia lighting?

I've got a rock with 6 green & blue ricordea on it under NO florescents. It is about 7" under a 30watt coralife 50/50 in light current. It's been growing over the past 3 weeks under these conditions. Usually about an 30 - 40 minutes after lights on, they are fully open. One of them looked...

    worm ID? (no pic)

I'm doing a head count and physical on all livestock every morning now :) I've kinda rearranged some of the rocks so that I have a clear view of where he went under. If I want to try and trap him, would I use the same tactics as trying to trap a bristleworm? This Saturday I get my first set of...

    worm ID? (no pic)

Here's an excellent article by Dr. Shimek about cirolanids: Cirolanids This picture was in the article and the coloring looks right. I wish I would have had more of an opportunity to observe it, especially to see if it had those unique eyes. It's got me scared now  I haven't lost...
