I agree completely. i have a wet dry and my nitrates are really high and tough to control. i've been reading a lot about it and i'm in the process of removing the bio balls all together and eventually replacing with LR.

i have bio balls and i believe that it has caused my nitrates to go way up!!! so i'm in the process of removing them all together and replacing with LR. Good luck to you.

the water in the sump is about 1/3 of the way up the sid(enough to cover the pump) and the water inside is up to the 3/4 of the tube so the gunk can over flow into the reservior.

I've been reading article and everyone says something different regarding vacuuming the sand during water changes? What do you all think about that? Will doing this reduce nitrate levels?

yeah...that happened to me too. i don't know, but i left my snail in there for 24 hours and nothing...so i took it out and threw it away...it didnt' smell very good, so i guess it was a gonner...

Well, i added the 3 chromis and 5 hermit crabs after a few days of just the tank running. It has about 50-60lbs of LR and 60lbs of LS in an 60 gal, so i didn't think that would be too much livestock. I added 5 more hermit crabs a few days later. I don't know about these test i got...test tube...

right now i just have 3 chromis and i think 6 hermit crabs. I think a few of the crabs have died and i have 1 missing fish. I'm feeding them only 1.5 of the mini cubes...barely any food in the water when i feed and very little goes into my filter so i figured i was okay with the feedings. should...

Thanks for all your feedback. well, i did a 30% water change today. Nitrates still show high, but not as high 80ppm. Could it be my test? I went to the LFS and they tested and it only showed up to be 20-40ppm when i was showing 160. I'm using the aquarium pharmaceuticals test tube kit? Do these...

could this be from a dead fish? I have 1 missing chromis. I've moved the rocks and still can't find him, so i figured the hermit crabs might eat him up....could that be why my nitrates are rocket high?

i think that is pretty good. I paid the same for an older 60 gal tank without the skimmer. Maybe i just got a bad deal...Congrats on the tank!

any ideas why everything else is all zeros? is that possibly why my nitrates are so high?
