    cycling a new tank

Thanks guys! That really helps me a lot. Not sure if I will start with cured or uncured. I may go with cured simply because that is all my LFS sells!

I understood what you said, I just didn't understand how to cycle a tank. But I posted the question in the reefs section and got some good answers. Thanks!

When you say you cycled the tank, what exactly does that mean? Does cured live rock need to be cycled? I am trying to understand this before I go off and start my tank.

Great idea about the "lace rock." Do you have to do anything to cure it or prepare it before you put it in the tank? I will call around and see if I can find anything around here.

    cycling a new tank

Well, I am about ready to start on my first reef tank. I am planning on starting the adventure around the beginning of Oct. I want to read more about cycling a new tank. I have read that if you used uncured rock you have to cure it. What if you use cured rock? Does it still go through a cycle...

Thanks for the replies steamboat. I may try their rock. Javatech-let me know what your grunge looks like when you get it in. Could you take some pics of it and let me see it? Are you ordering the rock too or just the grunge?

How exactly do you culture your rock? Do you buy some LR and place it with the aragocrete? If so, will it look different from the aragocrete? What about the garf grunge? What does it look like?

I have been looking at this site for a few days now. From what I understand they sell Aragocrete (dry base rock) which you can buy from them and then seed it with live rock. Does this really work? Has anyone done this? What about their "garf grunge"? Has anyone used it? It seems like it could be...

    color for background of tank

thanks for the advice! I went ahead and painted it the deep blue. I think I really like it. It looks good with the light shining down on it. But it is hard to tell without any rocks, sand, fish, etc. Now all I need to do is paint the stand and get enough money for the LR and enough patience to...

    color for background of tank

I am painting the back of my tank. What color looks good? I am considering either a dark blue or black. I want it to look as natural as possible, that's why I am leaning towards blue.

What Type Of Filter For a 30 Gal

bas12547- If I were you, I would reconsider a canister unit. I would spend the money instead on Live Rock. The Live Rock will do the filtering that you are wanting the canister to do. This way you let your aquarium filter itself and let the aquarium be as natural as it can, the way God designed...

    spraypainting tank

The water may touch it at times, but it won't be in constant contact. The paint is only on the lip that the glass top fits on. I went to the website and it says once the paint is dry, it is nontoxic. I hope it is okay.

    spraypainting tank

I bought a used tank and I am painting the old trim with spraypaint. About halfway through, I began considering whether or not the paint is toxic to fish (obviously I am painting an empty tank!!). I have spraypainted the top "lip" of the tank. Does anyone know if the paint will be a problem...

    Penguin Biowheel

I have just bought a 30L used tank. It came with a Penguin BioWheel. My thought is just to use LR, DSB and a skimmer for filtration. Would it help to use this biowheel? My initial thought is to not use it. Comments?

    southdown sand

NM Reef (and anyone else who wants to comment!)- Another question for you-Should I buy oolitic sand as well as crushed coral and mix the two? I have heard to have a range of particle size. Maybe buy a 30#bag of oolitic and a 15# bag of CC?
