    anyone use a de-ionizer????

I just bought a de-ionizer for tap water. It appears to be about the best thing I've seen for SW. Is it too good to believe????am I missing something? If I filtered my aquarium water thru it would it remove anything that is vital???? Like salt?

How do I keep the tanks temperature low in the summer months?

I took a lesson from Hooters.....I place a few ice cubes in a zip lock baggie and let it float on the surface and monitor religiously.

    Live Rock Placement

FF, I've had Saltwater tanks for about 20 years but recently ventured into a true reef tank. FYI, what I did was order smaller cured live rock initially about 6-8" pieces. I figured this was the rock that would shape my reef as they are the most easily moved and fit together better. I then order...

    ID question

I have 1 piece of LR that was only about 90% cured and it is covered in it. It's not really foamy, its more slimey and soft. I posted as to what it was and got same answer as you did.

What in the world is this??

This is Scuba Tiffy's dad. She wanted me to reply as she is busy. It is possible there is a hole at the back but its only about 3/4" long and hard to tell. No antenna that we can see. The "spines" on it seem to move like it is trying to crawl but they are not feet. They are latteral spines.

    LR - something going on

I cured several pieces of uncured LR for about 5 weeks. Ammonia finally tested near 0. I took one piece and placed it in a 10 gal. tank to see is I missed something. After just a few days, a white, slimey thingy started to form aroung 25% of the rock ( rock about 10"X12"). Is this thing going to...

    LS or Aragonite?

There are 2 types of live sand. 1) Aragonite sand is made of Calcium Carbonate ( CACO3 ) and will fizz if dropped into an acidic liquid like vinegar. The other is Silica Sand made of silicon dioxide ( SIO2 ). This will not fizz in an acidic liquid. In my opinion, Aragonite is superior to...

Why Live Sand over Crushed coral

Don't be to quick to put down CC. They make a sand sized "live" aragonite which is great if you are doing corals. Helps to buffer and adds calcium to water

    live rock questions

IF you will be using uncured LR, be prepared for a major stink in the house. It will also take the better part of a month with frequent water changes and more frequent removal of the LR to yank out all of the goo from the dead corals, anemonies, etc.....not pleasant. Cured LR will cycle in about...

    A bit frustrated

Ant, No Tang and I would put LR to form caves and tunnels for your fish. Also, after it has been established for a while, I would consider adding some frags and make a nano reef tank. BUT you will need to get your salinity about 3-4 points higher and about 78-80 degrees. Its fun to watch those...

    cured uncured?

If you are starting a tank, by all means use cured LR. Much of the dead material that causes the ammonia spike has already been removed. However, even though you receive cured LR, you must once again cure it because some more goodies will die off and will cause a spike. The difference being...
