I would imagine you are not getting your LR from a LFS with that 25 hr transit time. The wet newspaper should be fine and should harm anything. Continue with base rock to save money and that LR will seed it all eventually. doing water tests is the only way to know how things are in your tank...

you dont have to drill as companies make overflows that work just fine. I have the CPR90 on my tank and it hasnt failed me yet. Just dont try to clean it with a big baby bottle brush. I snapped the acrylic and i have jimmy rigged it to work again. But yea, drilling the tank would be best.

the gramma seems to be afraid of his shadow and doesnt hang around when the beauty or orchid are around. during feeding tonight, the most aggressive fish towards the food were the clowns, followed by the bigger PJ, then the beauty, then the orchid/gramma/wrasse, and the pff was the most benign...

How long did the tank cycle without fish in it before you added the fish or shrimp? When you did the wc, did you accidentally stir up the sand bed? Are you using RO/DI water for the WC? Atleast RO water, right?

as far as genes go, on wheels, made by honda and your all set. I see a problem of moving the gene to where you want it without wheels on it. Also, the sportsman engines are kidna loud. IT will work, once you have it to where you need it. It should run both tanks you have without a problem...
