    I have worms

So my wife is starting to get really interested in the tank. Before she would just watch the fish and move on.. but now she sits in front of it looking for any interesting thing that moves. This week it's bristle worms. Every time she spots one she calls for me. Of course.. I act like I've...

    White stringy worm ID.

I see about 6 or so in my tank. At first they were just on the glass. Recently one attached itself to the base of a frag. When I first saw them I thought it was sand stuck to the tank (in the shape of a worm), I used my magnet to wipe it off, and it was very stringy and long. If I were to...

    Internal vs external pumps

I use a 30gal Rubbermaid bin to prepare water for water changes. To mix the water I used a MagDrive 24 submersed in the bin. The pump is less than a year old, and does not run 24/7. One day I no longer heard the pump running. I opened the lid, and it smelled of a horrible odor. The pump had...

    Yellow Tang hand feeding ...

My Yellow Tang hand feeds, but not in front of the wife. I took a video of it. You can hear the wife's footsteps as she's walking toward the tank, and the tang suddenly shows no interest. I found it funny, and thought I would share :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xKRzC2WfuTM

    Vermetid snails on my hammer

I have a small hammer coral (3 branches), with 5 or 6 decent sized vermetid snails on them. Most of them are attached to the stalks, but of them has attached itself higher right under the polyps. Should I remove them? or should I enjoy them? Thanks Edit.. oops.. I thought I clicked the SPS...

Well water , RO & pressure

So, I moved into a new house, setup the tank and RODI. The water pressure was only at 15psi :(   For now I filled the tank with straight well water. Not really my plan, but don't have many options right now.   Has anyone tried those pumps designed to increase water pressure for RODI systems...

Brittle vs CBS.... Brittle: 1, CBS: 0

So my brittle starfish ate my coral banded shrimp. I saw it happen. The shrimp was hanging out in a corner under a rock, all of a sudden this arm of death reached out and wrapped around him, and pulled him in. I felt really bad, but it was amazing to watch.

    4ft light over a 6ft tank

I'm thinking about upgrading from a 4ft to 6ft tank. Anyone have experience or thoughts about hanging a 4ft light over the center of the tank? I would put the rocks and coral in the middle, and have "shaded/sandy" areas on the sides. I'm thinking it will either look really cool, or really...

Does food supplements contribute to nitrates?

So... I have hair algae denser than a tropical rain forrest right now. It's a new tank, so I know these blooms are common.. BUT.... I've been soaking food in zoecon, zoe, and I've also been adding vita-chem to the water every week. Do you think that contributed to the nutrients available for...

    aiptasia and the butterfly fish...

I just read somewhere that the copperband butterfly fish is great for eating aiptasia, and also doesn't disturb other corals (as long as they're well fed I suppose). Is there any truth to this? I can't include the link because it violates SWF.com's terms...I can PM it to you if you are really...

pH went from 8.2 to 7.8 in a month.

So I have a tank running for a month now. I have a deep sand bed, 2-3" of OOlite, and an inch of aragonite. When I tested the pH the first couple days it was running, it was 8.2. Now it's 7.8. This tank replaced a smaller tank, which was always at 7.8 also. I use Instant Ocean salt, and RO/DI...

    About to fire my CUC

I would lay them off, but there's plenty of work to be done! Rock rock rock.. they spend all their time on the rocks. What critter(s) can I get that will concentrate on the algae that's growing on the sand? Will a lawnmower blenny help? More snails and hermits? I notice my tang nibbling on...

This hobby is hazardous to your health :(

Well my friends, My cat woke me up at 2am this morning. I continue to lay in bed trying to fall back asleep, until the sound of my overflow box caught my attention. I was really dialing in to every gurgle and blip and drip sound it made. Then I started to think.. "what if the overflow isn't...

How do you keep your tank cool?

My tank goes from 79-85 degrees everyday. I raised the light higher off the surface. I have a large fan blowing across it as well. I know that not everyone here has a chiller, so how are you keeping your tank from roasting your critters? Also, room temperature doesn't go above 70. 75gal tank...

Auto top offs. What's your technique?

I found the float valve and bracket that I want to get. But.. I can't figure out the *best* way to setup a reservoir and a pump (that is cost effective). The RO/DI system is 2 rooms away in the laundry room, so running a hose from there to the tank is not an option (if I want to keep a good...

    The cloud of doom! Arrrrgh!

Sand. What the heck?! "Place sand directly into the aquarium, you will experience cloudiness, this will clear within 24-48hrs." That's an understatement. So, after it FINALLY settled (after what it seemed to be a week)... I wanted to move ONE rock! Now I'm back to a cloud of doom. Before the...

What are these small white snail type creatures..

They are very small, and abundant. They look like a curled up centipede, and attached to the glass. Does anything eat these? Thanks
