France, along with the majority of europe is just interested in preserving their image and promoting their own self-preservation. Chirac is so obsessed with looking like a friend to everybody but the USA that he'd shake hands with Osama himself if it made France more popular.
Most of europe is fighting what they think is "the good fight." If you are unfamiliar with that term, it just means that european nations are merely bashing USA because it is the "in" thing to do right now. Just like if you saw a group of people tackling and wresting with someone in the street, you would be curious of what was going on. If the assailants told you that the man being pummeled just knocked out an old lady and stole her purse.... you would jump in as well, taking their story as fact.
America is the superpower of the world. America is the light in our world of darkness. Little of anything major goes on in the world without our permission or guidance. As such, this kind of power naturally generates cynicism and even rancor among the rest of the world... much as how students taunt and jive their teachers, and how employees ridicule their bosses and scrutinize their efforts in an attempt to find mistakes.
This is my opinion on europe. While europe's actions may not be directly hostile towards the USA, their stance on our position comes at an inappropriate time in the world, and it is dangerous. This is no longer a few madmen in the burning desert on the other side of the world. This is organized hatred funded by fanatics of an evil and twisted religion. These terrorists have plans. They have tactics. They have weapons, funds, and sympathizers.
Wake up and smell the coffee. This isn't racism or intolerance. 100% of all the terrorists are muslims. Racial profiling is justified. When you go fishing, do you look for worms in the limbs of the trees? No, you dig in the dirt, because that is where 100% of the earthworms lie.
