come on lois you know bigger is always better (well in this case that is)
I KNOW....I KNOW......I was just thinking of space
Here is another DUMB question.....the longin goby is a sand dweller/sifter.....and you are not supposed to put sand in a QT
SOOO IIRC...I read somewhere that you can put a bowl of sand in there for it
...will that work?
you know this really stinks big time

You have so many tanks, I don't remember what equipment is on what tank.... I thought you have a phosban reactor ... ??? not on this tank.
anyway....
Set up your 16g if you can, it has to be better than a 10g

Flower...the phosban reactor is on the 225G.....the 54G has the aqua c remora skimmer and the cascade canister filter. I will be replacing the media in that as soon as I order more.
I guess I will drag the 16G back out

OK...YAYYYY...I have a 1/2 bag of aragonite left iver from when I set up the horse tank.....I can use that!!!!
SO should I cover the whole bottom with it then???
If it were me and the tank is going to be used as a QT, I would not cover the bottom of the tank in sand. I would get a shallow bowl (a terra cotta planter base would work) and use that to put the sand in. This way the goby can sift and can remove the sand easily. I do not put sand in my QT.

I was just reading the "how to" qt guide in the disease section...and it says that you can use a cup of DT sand to jump start the bio going
Do you know anything about that?

Yeah, you can tank sand and place it in a container in the tank. This will allow the bacteria to colonize in the QT provided it is given a surface to colonize on (pvc or ornaments).

OK....I have been pretty busy at work today and only scanned it....
I will have to go thru some of my things to see what I have as far as fake deco that I can use.....I know I need a cove for the longfin goby...and IT would be great if I could place the cave over the bowl of sand too
I may not get this qt set up till this weekend.....have to see how things go

Lois I am so sorry to hear this.
I will not add a fish to my DT without QTing it first. I see what you meant last night when you said that things could be worse than the little cyano in my tank. I did the little bowl thing for the little Goby that I had if you remember, and he went in it, but sadly if you remember he went floor surfing. Only think that I have now is a Pissed off Hammer because I move the Flow in the tank it has not fully opened since I changed one of the PH's.. LOL

First things first there is no guarantee that the sand you transfer from your DT to your QT will have any nitrifying bacteria on it. If anything I would use a piece of filter material something which would have come in constant contact with nutrient rich water. This is where you will have a better chance of finding the needed bacteria. The goby is going to move the sand around and out of the vessel you put in anyway so I would go with the new sand bed. As far as the concern of the bacteria having to have pvc or an ornament to grow on rest assured it will grow on any surface in your tank and as I have stated above most likely starting on your filter material

HMMM...I have an idea....what if I add a dummy wall in a corner of the tank....and just make a sand bed there?

Use fresh carbon in the canister to filter through the reef. You need to clean out the carbon about 2 days out, meaning replace it, or go back to using whatever was in there to begin with.
Yes, use a 2-3 cups of sand in the QT from your display. With hypo, which you need to choose as treatment for an uncycled QT, live sand is good to kick-start the cycle. You can set up a little glass dish with sand in it for the goby, but he will likely kick a lot out. Yes, fake marine friendly rocks, or pvc pieces for QT decor (fish comfort).

So let me play the devil’s advocate here. You transfer sand from your DT to your QT in hopes of it containing nitrifying bacteria. Sounds good. BUT what if you are also transferring a parasite or bacteria from your infected tank. IMO it’s just not worth it but Lois it’s your tank and your decision

What if you are transferring a contagion? Doesn't the sick fish already have whatever it is? That is why she is setting up a QT.
I usually recommend also transferring display tank water as well, but in this case, obviously not a good choice.
Meow, what was the product you used? Reef meds usually don't cause a complete wipe-out overnight. Are you sure it is ich, and not oodinium? When was the puffer added? What was the ammonia level in the display tank when you noticed the dead fish?

It was Herbtana.....I have had the puffer a few months....and it has just been the last couple of weeks I noticed the spots.....The water has been fine, BUT to tell you the truth I did not test it this morning....I hurriedly got the dead fish out and had to go to work....
I am going to have my husband build a retaining wall in the corner of my 16G tank, and I will add sand to that spot.....I can use a cup of sand from a different tank like the 225G....should I do that????
IDK what oodium is...so I looked at pics.....I don't think that was it....
As I said.....the flame hawk and the yellow clown goby looked PERFECT yesterday.....Maybe I got a bad batch of Herbtana :( My corals look great today

Just as an extra precaution check the cords on all the equipment just to make sure its in good working order.
