DO NOT DO as Meowzer did :(

It pains me to post this thread, BUT I must....I did a very foolish thing, and want to make sure NO ONE else does something as DUMB as I just did.
NO FLAMING PLEASE....I am upset at myself enough....ONLY sharing this so maybe someone else won't make the same IDIOTIC mistakes..and YES I feel like a hypocrite....
WELL....A couple of months ago I got a Puffer for my 54G....so cute I couldn't resist it...NOPE NO QT (mistake #1) A couple of weeks ago, I noticed what looked like ich

Decided to try to use vitamins and see if Health could fight it off....My 2 blue reef chromis disappeared as did my new blue cleaner wrasse.....
THEN....KNOWING BETTER....I decided to try an organic cure (BIGGEST MISTAKE OF MY LIFE!!!!) and my fishies. This was yesterday....I woke up this morning to a tank full of DEAD FISH.....The Puffer, clown, flame hawk and PJ Cardinal...ALL DEAD!!!!.....
The only thing alive is the longfin sleeper goby....and inverts...OH and corals......Monday mornings I do not have a lot of time....BUSY day for me at work...BUT I managed to dig all my dead fish out....and I started 10G's of fresh SW....When I get home tonight I will do a W/C and make up another batch for tomorrow too.
FUTURE PLANS....LOL.....IDK....Leave tank empty for 2 months...SET UP A QT.....and NEVER NEVER try to treat a fish in a DT with ANYTHING
READ THE DISEASE SECTION....and FOLLOW IT COMPLETELY...........
That's the end of my fateful story.....I killed all my fish, and have no one to blame but myself........
p.s.....DON'T EVER BUY HERBTANA

So sorry for your loss Lois. As far as the cures for ick other than Hypo and copper none work and most state that they help resist ick not cure it. I find it odd that you lost a lot of fish at one time. The ick parasite actually kills rather slowly. It does so by opening up the fish to bacterial infection or impacting its gills. What were the symptoms you noticed before they died other than white spots

Absolutely none Joe....The flame hawk and yellow clown goby actually looked perfect last night...The clown and the PJ Cardinal and the puffer had dots....BUT (except puffy) all were eating well....I was soaking the food in garlic and other vitamins too
I really think the stuff poisoned them....I was just trying to boost their immune system to try to fight this off :(
The stuff did say to turn skimmer off....I DID....BUT I put it back on this morning

Oh Meowzer....I'm so sorry, such a shame. I would put the remaining fish in a hospital tank and leave the DT fishless for the 6 to 8 weeks.
I wonder what the medicine did to kill everythig like that...maybe it sucked the oxygen from the water????? I agree with Joe, ich doesn't kill that fast.

Flower I am betting it was the stuff.....I put it in yesterday morning though...and when I went to bed at 10 p.m. last night every one was fine.
I gave them a snack about 7 p.m......and they all ate it like normal....
The only thing left is the longfin sleeper goby.....DUMB QUESTION....can they get ich? I know some scaleless fish don't get it

I'm crying with you....I don't know about ich...I know sea horses don't get it...I didn't know some scaless fish didn't, until right now. I guess sea horses are fish, I kind of think of them as in their own little group....sea horse, sea dragons and pipefish....
You know it really sounds like maybe something else killed the fish, like maybe an electric shock. My instant phosphate remover warns to not overdose because it sucks the oxygen out of the water..red slime remover does that too. Maybe the reactor went crazy? Is this the tank with red slime you kept removing? ....and if so didn't you say you decided to try a chemical remover?
I'm just tossing ideas out here....

What reactor???
YES, I treated this tank once with the red slime stuff, BUT that was a few weeks ago. I think if it was an electric shock...the inverts and corals would show some signs too....they were all fine this morning.
I am going to order some new chemi-pure elite, do a few water changes and just leave the tank empty for now....

Lois keeping the tank fallow for six weeks will break the life cycle of ick IF it in fact is ick. If not and it is a parasite that killed your fish its life cycle may be longer. As far as goby’s getting ick. You have to remember there is a big difference between not getting and not be easy susceptible to ick. I don’t think its lack of scales has anything to do with it. The fact that goby’s in general stay on the bottom or bury themselves in the substratum makes them a harder target for parasites in their free swimming stage to infect

So JOE.....Do you think I need to take the goby out?
I think am going to leave the tank empty until November....close to 9 weeks.....

Lois, I'm so sorry for your loss...
It really sucks to see any of our little buddies go like this...
I know what your talking about the puffer because I had a porcupine puffer as well (baby one caught from the ocean with my bare hands) and it constantly had issues with ick so I had to donate him to LFS....
Which reminds me that I need to get a QT as well... my boy broke the tank when he was still here by climbing in while I was looking away in the tank and I have been just putting it off...
Hope you have a great monday and hopefully you will have awesome deals when filling in the tank later on.

Sorry Meowzer. That really stinks. At some point most of us do something that deep down inside we know isn't the best choice and later regret it. Your not alone. It is good of you to share this experience to help keep others from making the same mistake.

Hate that happened. Quarantine is a must when you have sooo many fish in a tank that you love, and paid good money for. lol. Most fish aren't quarantined properly, even at LFS where sick fish are regularly sold. You'll do better next time, you can't expect everything to go smoothly when your in this hobby.

So sorry meowzer.... that does suck and I can relate completely. but I do agree with joe, take all fish out and leave it empty for 6 to 8 weeks to be safe. I'm sure you glanced at the thread by Tangs Rule on QT'g. Very good thread to review in my opinion. Sorry again for the loss of your critters.

What were the ingredients in this organic cure?
IDK....I just know it is supposed to ne natural to BOOST immune systems so they can fight the "ich".....not a cure....
My next decision
I have a 16G bow.....will that make a good qt...or should I just get a standard 10G??
:( I do not have the room for another tank SIGH
