I've read on some sites that Elegence Coral is expert level only and some have it as moderate (from beginner to experienced reefers). So what do you think it is and why ?

Until the aussies started coming in, they just never lasted too long in people's tanks. Some argue that the water in our tanks is too pristine and that the coral like dirtier water. I don't really know.
I have heard that the aussie elegances do much better. Could just be a marketing move though...

Well I got this from my LFS not sure where they got it from but I asked if it was easy to keep they ofcourse said yes :(...what was I thinking when I asked.
I have it on the SB and it's getting the light and flow it needs and my calcium levels are always maintained. As far as the water being too perfect lol I don't know about that. Hope it does ok.

Very good theories about elegance corals. Youll see why its expert after you read that.
I read it, I just don't understand it really :) I HOPE IT LIVES IT WAS EXPENSIVE.
There's Brine Shrimp that circulates the tank a few times a week...and I dose Iodine every 3 weeks when I do a water change. It's on the SB and not near any other corals. I don't know what symptyms to look for and don't understand the article really. If someone could tell me what i should be looking for that would help.

Mine looks great I just don't know what I should be looking for. I got a 6 inch one for $64. They told me it was easy to care for.

ok but It is sad, mine is on it last legs..........I am very upset at myself that I did not do more research,I try never to buy animals that don't do well in home tanks, it is just not fare to the animals no matter your skill level. I just think those should be left alone and only be enjoyed in their nat. habbitats.
I will use his skeleton to frag. I will never do that again and I am very sorry to you little Elegence. Gosh I am so upset!!!!!!!!!!!

the first pic is mine
and the others are also sick that I found on thw web.

The research out there on this species is speculative at best. If you had your heart set on getting something, you were getting one, period. But please, dont feel bad...
I beg you not to give up on this species. Mine is > 1 year old, and I have had her for about 6 months, and it is the most amazing coral. I have higher than normal phoshates. I also have numerous inverts crawling through the elegance at any given point in time. She rubs up against live rock all day (and seems to like it???), and there is an engineer goby that has lived underneath her for months.
So there is no way to say what they will like. I have offered numerous theories, but they are just observations based on my experiences. For example, mine seems to be most happy when the water hasn't been changed in a while. See the pics below. I took these 20 minutes ago. I fed tge tank mysis today, and I haven't done a water change in 2 weeks (long for this tank) and she is really inflated today!

Just for future referrence to anybody, in the New Hobbists forum, theres a thread of organisms that dont do well in captivity for one reason or another. Very helpful IMO. Keep it in the back of your head when you see something incredible youve never seen before.

While I sort of agree with Paint, if I had subscribed to the belief that these shouldn't be kept, I would have missed out on being able to own one of the coolest corals that exists.
I would just try to make a deal with your LFS. Pay half today, and pay the other half in a month. I know my LFS would do that, but that might not apply to more corporate LFS.

You will know...When a Turbo knocked over a piece of LR onto my elegance, it got "that look" for about 24 hours. The only way I can describe it is "sickly." Its color with change, it will discharge this necrotic, filmy tissue, and well...look unwell...
Sorry, I am at a loss right now. I saw a lot of pics of elegance before I bought mine to see how they should NOT look. It wasn't until then that I could identify a sick species.
Funny thing is, this is a skeletal coral, and my calc is relatively low (360-380), and mine does excellent. So I dont think you need to do anything special. More about being a little lucky (and seeing the species thrive for a month+ before buying. I saw my elegance in a BioCube at a local gas station for months before the guy offered to sell it to me...and a reef nut was born...

Elegance corals, several years ago, were fairly easy to keep.
That has changed. While there are certainly succes stories out there, the numbers point to a vast number dying in captivity. Studies are being done as to what has changed to allow this to occur.
If you have one, sweet. If not, I do not suggest trying again. The odds are monstrously stacked against you keeping a new arrival successfully.

I'm so bummed I bought it. I mean it still looks good got it Sat, The guy at the store straight out lied to me ...I guess you cant trust these LFS.Hopefully He's lying and maybe It's not a real elegence coral. You know what's sad I dealt with one of the owners. UNBELIVEABLE!!!

I had one before. Paid $65 for it. Lasted only a week in my tank. I tried placing it in various areas hoping it would come back. My LFS had it for 2 weeks and it was looking good before I bought it. My other LFS had 3 that I saw about a month ago that we're looking very good. Well, 1 month later, they've only got 1 left which is starting to recede and the other 2 is basically is dead. I really want an elegance but I'm gun shy now.
