Flower's Sump/Fuge Build

the sucking sounds is from the drain pipe in the outside overflow box having air in it.
If you have a piece of tubing you can put in the drain from the top jsut stick it in there and move it up and down. you will probably find a spot where the sucking will stop. Thats what I did with mine.
Eventually I'm going to do a durso pipe i think, sounds like they work pretty good and don't ahve the sucking sound problem.
You could also just play with the filter that goes over the drain pipe and try putting it on and taking it off and such and see if that doesnt help.

The sound is coming from the bubble trap in the sump, not the overflow. t isn't real load either..it's just there. I know I will get used to it and not even notice. I am used to canister filters and when they make a noise something is wrong so I am sensitive to it.

ohh wierd, never had that happen. maybe liek shawn said you can diffuse that with some more rubble or something.
what kind of canister filters wehre you using?

the rock would be used to diffuse the flow so its not sputtering and burping and stuff just into an open bubble tower. instead the sputtering and burping gets absorbed by the rubble. And its a great b io filtration just like LR but more in bioball size.

Thanks Jstdv8!!!!
How's your water level looking Flower? How's the skimmer performing thus far? Any foam starting to build? Any micro bubbles being put off by the skimmer? How's the corals looking today?

Good Morning!
The skimmer is running and I have some foam halfway up the cup tube but no skim, do you want me to putz with it or just leave it for now? The sump is surprisingly quieter this morning. I had to open the stand door to hear it. I had my Mom pause the TV so I could listen...it sounds like a little brook with water flowing, I love it.
Thank you so much, I’m so happy to finally have it here and running. My head is spinning from all the wonderful things that come from this little project you started. I learned so very much, I made some wonderful Cyber friends and I HAVE A SUMP/FUGE! Even the broken sump turned into a useful experience, we got to know Slice and he was able to be a part of the project.
BIG HUG! Now if UPS would just come through and cough up the cash they owe you, all would be perfect.
EDIT:
No micro bubbles, there is some tiny ones in the skimmer chamber but not in the return, so the baffles are doing their job..

Excellent!!!!! Is the return pump still dialed down or did you turn it up a bit? The sump did quiet down for me after 24hrs or I got use to it running. If you have the pump turned way down try turning the pump 1/2 up or a tad more than 1/2 and see how everything reacts. I would like to see the pump run 3/4 if not wide open, but we'll make small incremental adjustments as we go. That way we know how hard to push it, but I know we could push more water through, but we want the monster skimmer to perform.
Speaking of the skimmer I would let it continue to run as it is, and possibly later today or tomorrow we could do a small adjustment to dial it up a tad. We need pics of the skimmer foam so far!!!!! I'm starving for pics!!!

Flower we did deviate from the original plans a bit on the baffles.... We had originally said 1" spacing between the baffles, but I went back to 3/4" between them to give you a bit more room in the return section.

That is fantastic news to wake up to - Flower I guess you are going to run your canisters for a while yet, how long do you think you have to run them. Maybe take soom of the media and foam out of one of them and put it it the sump, just curious if that is what peopole do. Anyways bring on the sand man.

That's not a bad idea Al !!!!! Pulling the foam out o the canister and dropping in the sump to help along. A good place might be in the bubble tower for the time being!!!!

Alright I turned it up..and all is running just fine. It is almost completely up now. Here are some pictures of how everything looks under there this morning. LOL...I need to clean off the water spots from my overflow accident yesterday.
Al, After my canisters turned on me and all the hoses cut lose..I removed them. I didn’t keep the media either..I didn’t even think of it, the canisters were removed and only my micro bubble useless coralife skimmer was all I had running before I got the sump set up the next day.
The only filtration I have is the live rock until the skimmer and sump kick in and do its job. All the extra water should keep things in balance..all the corals, shrimp and fish look fine. I haven’t checked for ammonia yet but I don’t think I have any issues. I have to go to Temple this morning so I will do some water tests when I get back around noon. I know my nitrates are high. My sea fan was looking pretty sick and my colt leather is shrunk up and near death. The shrimp are fine so it isn’t outrageously high..I DON’T THINK.

Looking really good!!!!! With the pump up now will continue to watch for micro bubbles....skimmer looks good still breaking in, and will hold off adjustment today, but should actually start producing some nice thick foam!!!! Meowzer will have to jump in and give fine tuning points for you on the skimmer. Can wait to bring the fugue online!!!!! Is there any water in the fugue at this point?

I would leave the skimemr alone for now....UNLESS you started to get a lot of WET liquid....
Mine was skimming great within a few days......

I don't think she'll start collecting anything, but hoping to break the neck in this way to build a good foam head. Meowzer have you toted enough with tours to go between wet and dry skimming?

Well I did some water tests to see what things are now, compared to what they will be later. Apparently my daily water changes did more good than I realized. WHEW!

Here are the results:
PH - 8.0
KH – 7 or 125.3 (according to my test instructions = perfect ocean)
Nitrates – 5.0
Ammonia – 0
Phosphates – 0
SG – 1.024
Temp – 76 ( the sump cooled things down, so I put the titanium heater in the return chamber of the sump.Set on 79)

EDIT:
Also what about my ATO, I don’t have the refugium in but what about evaporation? What do I do, set up a temp water line to keep things in check?
